Gündringen: Local Trail, Chapel and Local History
Accommodation in Gündringen
For a stay in Gündringen, outdoor activity and local history can be considered as two distinct points of focus. The local trail is a circular route with four options ranging from 4 to 9 kilometers. The length of each route provides a practical guide to the distance you can expect to cover. Selected sections run along paved paths suitable for strollers; this applies to individual sections, not necessarily to all route options. The route options and surfaces were described in April 2025. Check the route information locally again before setting out.
Local Trail: Landscape and Local Heritage
The local trail connects historic sights with a natural habitat and views across the surrounding area. Information boards explain the local heritage, adding a cultural and historical perspective to the circular route. Nature, views and local history thus sit side by side. If you would like to learn about local heritage as well as enjoy the landscape on a walk, the boards provide a thematic focus.
Ölberg Chapel and St. Remigius
The Ölberg Chapel offers a different focus. It was built in 1891 on the former Galgenberg and can be reached via a Way of the Cross with stations. From the chapel, the view extends across Gündringen. Unlike the local trail, it links a religious Stations of the Cross route with a view of the town; the local trail, in turn, connects sights, a natural habitat and information boards.
The furnishings of St. Remigius Church include copies of panels from the Rohrdorf Altarpiece, a Pietà, figures of saints, Stations of the Cross, historic bells from predecessor churches and colored stained-glass windows. Unlike the chapel, which is reached by a Way of the Cross, St. Remigius brings together the listed objects as different elements of the church’s furnishings. The altarpiece panels are copies; the bells come from predecessor churches.
More to Explore in the Wider Nagold Destination
Within the wider Nagold destination, the town of Nagold offers its own starting points for walks and history. The Nagold River flows through the heart of Nagold and continues to shape the townscape; there are many green spaces along the river. Walking routes in Nagold pass through the old town, follow the river and climb up to the castle. This gives you a choice of different routes through the town, along the water and up to a historic destination.
The Nagold Valley Cycle Path runs from the source of the Nagold in the Black Forest to its confluence with the Enz near Pforzheim, passing right through Nagold. Conditions along the route may vary. Those interested in Nagold’s history will also find a link to its past economy: clothmaking and tanning were the town’s most important trades for centuries, a development encouraged by the Nagold and Waldach rivers.
Nagold’s Schlossberg was settled and fortified as early as Celtic times. Regular guided tours of the history of Hohennagold Castle and Schlossberg are offered at the Hohennagold Castle ruins. Check the latest dates before planning your visit.
