Discover Holzschlag: Via Apis and Hiking Trails
Accommodation in Holzschlag
Holzschlag lies at an altitude of 816 metres amid Buntsandstein and granite, surrounded by dense forests. For your trip planning, hiking trails, the Bähnle Cycle Path and an access point to the Wutach Gorge offer different ways to explore the area. The history of Glashütte and other topics in the wider destination of Bonndorf in the Black Forest provide additional context.
Hiking on Via Apis and Circular Trail No. 2
The Via Apis bee nature trail starts at the Holzschlag hiking car park and is an approximately two-kilometre, pram-friendly panoramic circular trail. There are 15 information boards along the themed trail, as well as an observation beehive, an information centre and parking spaces. A playground is located at the starting point. Its approximate length, circular route and stated suitability for prams make Via Apis easy to incorporate into your hiking plans.
Circular Trail No. 2 Holzschlag–Glashütte starts at Holzschlag village square. It follows the bee nature trail and then the Vorderbergweg, Kohlweg and Bruggenweg to the Glaserbuck Hut, which is a basic shelter. Unlike Via Apis, this route is described in terms of several trail sections and the hut as its destination; Via Apis, by contrast, is described as an approximately two-kilometre panoramic loop. The two hiking suggestions therefore differ mainly in their routes and the landmarks mentioned for each.
Bus service and cycle path
Circular Trail No. 3 Holzschlag–Gündelwangen is another option for planning your outing. It can be reached from Neustadt or Bonndorf using bus route 7258. As the access information comes from a route leaflet updated on 13 June 2018, check the current timetable before setting out.
For a cycling tour, the Bähnle Cycle Path follows the historic railway line to Holzschlag. From there, it runs above Gündelwangen past horse pastures and offers a lovely view of the Wutach Gorge. This route therefore combines the railway line with a later section above Gündelwangen and a view of the gorge.
The Wutach Gorge and local history
There is an access point to the Wutach Gorge from the Holzschlag village square motorhome parking area. Another local connection leads into the past: the small hamlet of GlashĂĽtte once belonged to Holzschlag, is first documented in 1296 and takes its name from a glassworks that operated there.
