Friedenweiler is an appealing destination for travelers looking to combine local history and nature with specific leisure activities. When searching for a hotel, you can consider whether the former monastery church, a longer gorge walk or swimming options are especially important for your trip. The wider Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald destination also offers other leisure destinations and regional transport information.

Monastery history and musical craftsmanship

Friedenweiler Parish Church is a former monastery church. Its history spans two clearly distinct periods: the exterior walls largely date from around 1500, while the tower was rebuilt after the third fire in 1725. The year 1725 therefore dates the tower’s reconstruction, not the entire church. This makes it possible to understand the older exterior walls and the later tower reconstruction as distinct chapters in the town’s history.

Another cultural connection leads to Rötenbach. Violin maker Johann Straub practiced his craft there, and Ludwig van Beethoven played a viola made by Straub. The viola connects Straub’s craftsmanship in Rötenbach with Beethoven’s music-making. For your trip, this offers a distinct way to explore local history alongside the church’s architecture: the focus here is on instrument making rather than architectural history.

Rötenbach Gorge and water activities

From Rötenbach, you can head straight into the Rötenbach Gorge, which is about six kilometers long. It follows narrow paths and crosses several bridges before joining the Wutach Gorge. At around six kilometers, the gorge makes for a longer nature walk; the outdoor swimming pool and footbath offer a different focus on water.

Friedenweiler’s outdoor swimming pool has a heated outdoor pool measuring 25 m × 12.5 m. There is also a footbath in the Märchenwald. This gives you a choice between two different water activities: a heated outdoor pool and a footbath.
