If you are looking for a hotel in Hochdorf, you can choose a destination based on the themes you want to shape your stay: moorland, outdoor trails or local history. The Wettenberger Ried is a distinctive natural area; it is complemented by a moorland trail, viewpoints in the RiĂź Valley, opportunities for cycling and inline skating, as well as cultural history in the districts. The following highlights provide concrete pointers for planning your trip.

The Wettenberger Ried: Raised Bog and Nature Reserve

The Wettenberger Ried covers 66 hectares and is a raised bog situated on the high plateau between the valleys of the RiĂź and the Umlach. It is designated as a nature reserve and protected forest area; it received nature reserve status in 1982. This landscape includes the two nutrient-poor raised bog areas of Wettensee and Wasenmoos.

The formation of the Ried can also be placed in a historical context: it formed during the RiĂź glaciation, when the ice retreated and left behind a water-retaining depression. Measures to rewet the area have been carried out since 1997 to restore the raised bog. This brings together geological formation and long-term landscape management. The moorland trail runs through this raised bog landscape and offers a way to experience the natural area on site.

Trails, Viewpoints and Active Exploration

The moorland trail is 2.5 kilometres long. Information boards provide insights into the landscape; there is also a place to rest and a viewing platform beside a newly formed lake. The boards, resting place and viewpoint offer different highlights along the same route: you can learn about the moor, take a break along the way or look out across the landscape from an elevated vantage point. Trail conditions can change seasonally.

A different perspective awaits on the forest walk to Michel-Stoi. Several viewpoints look out over the RiĂź Valley. The two trails therefore differ in their focus: the raised bog and information boards are the main features of the moorland trail, while the route to Michel-Stoi passes through the forest to views over the valley.

There are also opportunities for active exploration. The Riß Valley cycle path along the Ulm–Friedrichshafen railway line and the trails to Lindenweiher are suitable for inline skating; the routes have few inclines and almost no car traffic. This is different from the network of cycle paths, which, according to the municipality, allows you to put together routes through the Upper Swabian countryside based on your interests. When planning, you can therefore choose between individual routes described here and a custom cycling tour.

Church and Local History

St. Martin’s Church is located in Unteressendorf. Its façade is Romanesque; in 1733/34, the church was remodelled in the Baroque style. These two stylistic references point to different phases in the building’s history and make the church a specific cultural attraction alongside the nature trails. If you are planning to visit the interior, check visitor information in advance, as opening hours may vary.

Another historical connection reaches back to the early Middle Ages: the name Hochdorf was first mentioned in a document in 805. This date marks the first recorded use of the name. The biography of Joannes Baptista Sproll is also linked to one of the districts: the seventh bishop of the Diocese of Rottenburg-Stuttgart was born and grew up in Schweinhausen. The name and biography offer two different ways to explore local history—through Hochdorf’s early mention and through a figure from Schweinhausen.

Getting There and Planning Your Stay
