Achstetten offers points of interest for a trip that combines architectural history and cycling. The castle and the Church of St. Oswald and Agatha are architecturally connected by a covered walkway. The dates, too, tell of different chapters in the town’s history.

Castle, Church and Historical Details

A castle on the site of Achstetten Castle was mentioned as early as 1386. The present-day castle was built by Franz Anton Bagnato the Younger between 1794 and 1796. Thus, two different dates stand side by side: the early mention of a castle and the construction period of the present-day castle.

The Church of St. Oswald and Agatha was built in 1625/26 in the Renaissance style. A covered walkway supported by tall wooden pillars architecturally connects the church gallery to the castle. The church also houses an organ installed by the Link company from Giengen an der Brenz. Part of the gallery is open to the public; access conditions may vary.

The castle interior includes a Neoclassical staircase, furniture, an iron stove dating from 1798 and portraits of the Freyberg family. Access to the interior may vary. To the south of the church stands the Chapel of the Annunciation, built around 1650 as a burial chapel for the Freyberg family. The castle park includes a fallow deer enclosure. Check the visitor regulations for the enclosure before your visit.

Biberach and Regional Cultural Destinations

The drive from Achstetten to Biberach takes approximately 20 minutes; the actual journey time depends on traffic. Biberach, a former Free Imperial City with many historic buildings still intact, is characterized by its markets, towers and large merchant houses. Biberach is also a meeting point of the Baroque Route, the German Timber-Frame Road and the Upper Swabian Mill Route.

The Upper Swabian Museum Village of Kürnbach is also part of the Biberach travel destination. It presents six centuries of history; more than 30 historic buildings offer insights into everyday life in times gone by. These regional themes complement the story of Achstetten’s own architectural history without conflating it with Biberach’s sights. The pilgrimage church of Steinhausen is also among the regional cultural destinations within the wider Biberach travel destination. Dominikus Zimmermann and his brother Johann Baptist Zimmermann built it from 1728 to 1731. The Museum of the History of Christians and Jews in Laupheim is also part of the Biberach travel destination and explores three centuries of shared life between Christian and Jewish residents.
