Weidenstetten: Forest, RuheForst and Summervibrations
Accommodation in Weidenstetten
Weidenstetten and the associated hamlet of Schechstetten are surrounded by forests, juniper heaths, dry valleys and open farmland. The landscape is well suited to hiking and cycling; the RuheForst and the winter Summervibrations party offer further highlights. So when looking for a hotel in Weidenstetten, consider whether you want to focus on nature and outdoor activities or on an event date.
Landscape and views
Forests and juniper heaths shape the surrounding area, along with dry valleys and open farmland. This creates a mix of wooded and more open landscapes. You can choose whether you would rather hike or cycle. In clear weather, the view from the RuheForst stretches across the countryside to the Alps.
Discover the RuheForst
The RuheForst Weidenstetten/Schwäbische Alb is a woodland cemetery in Weidenstetten. Free guided tours led by a member of staff provide more information about this form of burial and the tree population, which has been sustainably managed for several generations of forest. The tours therefore bring together two specific topics: the form of burial and the sustainable use of the forest. You can request a private tour. Dates for scheduled tours may change; if you plan to visit the RuheForst as a fixed part of your itinerary, check the current schedule.
The Summervibrations party in winter
The summervibrations disco takes place annually in Weidenstetten. The similarly named Summervibrations summer party draws thousands of visitors to the town each year in the middle of winter. The name “summer party” is therefore not a reference to a summer event date. If you want to plan your trip around the event, check the dates for the current edition in advance.
More nature and culture in the Alb-Donau district
Across the wider destination of the Alb-Donau district, regional hiking, cycling and cultural attractions complement the interests of visitors to the town. The Alb-Donau district is part of the Swabian Alb Biosphere Area. The 20 circular “Eiszeitpfade” trails, ranging from 6 to 14 km, are suitable for day hikes. The family-friendly “Eiszeitspuren” trails cover 1 to 6 km; the Besinnungsweg is designed for multi-day tours. This offers a range of formats: shorter routes, day hikes and multi-day tours.
The themed cycling routes also vary in length: the “Eiszeittäler” tour is 75 km long, the “Berg Bier-Tour” is 115 km, and the “Albtäler” cycle route is 186 km; the “Albtäler” has received a four-star award. The three distances range from the shortest tour, “Eiszeittäler,” to the longest of these routes, “Albtäler.”
Cultural attractions in the Alb-Donau district include Hohle Fels near Schelklingen, a UNESCO World Heritage cave and the discovery site of the “Venus of Hohle Fels” and the “Vulture Bone Flute.” Both finds are around 42,500 years old. In Blaustein, the Ehrenstein Stone Age village is a Neolithic settlement in the valley of the Blau and part of the transnational and serial UNESCO World Heritage property “Prehistoric Pile Dwellings around the Alps.”
Architecture adds further facets to the wider destination: Obermarchtal Abbey stands directly above the Danube and took on its present form between 1686 and 1795. Blaubeuren Abbey was founded in 1085 as a Benedictine monastery; its current buildings are mainly Gothic and were built between 1466 and 1510.
