Villecroze offers a range of options for planning your trip: the car-free old town with its historic buildings, a walking tour of religious sites, and a landscape of tufa cliffs, a park and a waterfall. You can also walk along a stream or visit a Provençal weekly market. Choose whether to focus mainly on village history, architecture or nature.

Old town, lanes and caves

In the car-free old town, vaulted passageways and arcades shape the townscape. Flower-filled squares and fountains add to its lanes. Rue des Arcades is a typical lane in Villecroze’s medieval quarter and reflects the historic character of this part of town.

Among the notable cultural sites are the Grottes fortifiées de Villecroze. They have been classified as “Sites et Monuments Naturels” since 1924. A visit takes you through five levels, giving the site its own distinct layout. The caves offer a different focus from the arcades and squares of the old town: here, the fortified caves themselves and their multi-level tour take centre stage.

A walking tour of religious sites

The Circuit de l’art sacré is an approximately five-kilometre walking tour of the village’s oratories, crosses and chapels. It draws attention to small religious monuments, while Rue des Arcades chiefly illustrates the layout of the medieval lanes. Its approximate length gives you an idea of how to plan this self-guided tour; its religious stops also set it apart from a visit focused on the old town’s architecture.

Park, tufa cliffs and waterfall

Parc de Villecroze covers 2.5 hectares and is home to many trees. It lies at the foot of tufa cliffs, where the troglodytic caves were carved. Along the cliff face, a 35-metre-high waterfall flows onward into the stream that crosses the park. The cliffs, caves and watercourse give this area a different character from the arcades and fountains of the historic town centre.

Villecroze is part of the Natura 2000 site “Sources et tufs du Haut-Var”. To help choose between village culture and landscapes, you can also compare the trails: the Circuit de l’art sacré leads to oratories, crosses and chapels, while the “Cascade de paysages” hike follows the stream fed by the waterfall. Each route therefore has its own thematic focus.

The Villecroze tourist office provides information on marked hiking trails for download. If you’re planning a hike, you can consult the information in advance and choose your route from among the signposted trails.

The Provençal market

The Marché provençal de Villecroze takes place every Thursday morning throughout the year. If you’d like to include the market as a set date in your travel plans, check the date in advance. Unlike the walking tours and hiking trails, the market gives you a specific day of the week to plan around; its morning hours are another useful detail for planning your stay.
