Le Val is shaped by a long, narrow valley, a history of sacred architecture and local exhibitions. Two hiking routes differ considerably in length, duration and difficulty. You can tailor your trip to specific interests: chapels and museums, or a trail through the countryside.

Valley and River Landscape

The long, narrow valley of Le Val stretches between two chains of hills covered with pine trees and garrigue. A river runs through the landscape, which is dotted with vineyards, olive groves and gardens. The Ribeirotte is a vibrant, dynamic river habitat of great ecological diversity and importance to local quality of life.

Chapels and Architectural History

The Chapelle Saint-Blaise is one of the rural chapels along the so-called Chapelles trail, which leads to the Paracol hilltop. It is mentioned in the Charter of Paracol, dating from 1010. The Chapelle Notre-Dame de Paracol stands on the summit of the hill near the former oppidum. It is an example of Romanesque architecture and houses a statue of the Virgin Mary dating from the 9th century.

The church of Le Val was built in 1068. The Chapelle Notre-Dame de Pitié dates from 1654; it and its four oratories have been listed as historic monuments since 2000. Its 17th-century façade is decorated with shells and pebbles. These historical details give the chapels and the church their own distinct dates.

Museums and Collections

The Maison de l'Olivier occupies part of a former oil mill dating from 1720. It displays old tools associated with olive growing in Le Val and throughout the Mediterranean region. The Musée d'Art Sacré presents sacred art objects, liturgical works and religious vestments in the 16th-century Chapelle des Pénitents Noirs. The collection also includes a large number of votive offerings.

The Musée du santon is housed in a former communal oven dating from the 12th century. It displays Provençal santons and nativity scenes from around the world. The Crèche Rossellini is a large terracotta nativity scene inspired by Naples. Le Val thus brings together a variety of religious and ethnographic collections.

Other Cultural Sites

The Maison de la Route Médiévale presents an exhibition about the medieval route from Grasse to Draguignan. It is housed in a former Romanesque building that once served as Le Val's first town hall. Another local tradition is the Foire à la saucisse. Its programme includes a market selling regional specialities, processions by brotherhoods, historical re-enactments and meals accompanied by commentary. If you plan to attend, check the event dates in advance.

Town Walk and Hiking

The cultural and historical walk through Le Val is self-guided and takes about 45 minutes. Numbered signs on building façades or on lecterns guide you through the town. Check the local signage before setting out.

For a shorter outing, the educational trail “Le Val au fil de l’eau” is another option: it is 3.5 kilometres long, takes about an hour and is rated very easy. It starts on Rue Frédéric Mistral. Considerably more demanding is the yellow-marked “Panoramas sur Le Val” hike: it covers 19 kilometres, is rated difficult, takes about six hours and 30 minutes, and starts at the Jardin théâtre car park. The stated distances, durations and difficulty ratings make the different time commitments and levels of challenge clear. Check trail conditions and any fire restrictions in force before setting out.
