Venelles: Heritage and Nature Trails
Accommodation in Venelles
Venelles offers cultural and historical sights as well as walking and hiking options. When planning a hotel stay, this distinction can help you choose the focus of your trip: you might be interested in architectural history and art, or want to explore trails of different lengths and for different purposes. This makes it easier to choose Venelles based on the topics that appeal to you most on your trip.
Heritage and History in Venelles
The Moulin de Venelles was built in 1662 and remained in operation until it closed in 1904. Its elevated location offers views of Sainte-Victoire and the countryside around Aix-en-Provence. Its year of construction, period of operation and views describe different aspects of the site: the Moulin represents both its former use and its distinctive setting in the landscape.
The surviving remains of the Castrum also tell the story of the town. They were converted into the Voûte Félix Chabaud, an exhibition hall inaugurated in 1987. The Église Saint-Hippolyte was inaugurated in 1911. Inside the church is the monumental bas-relief “Le Baptême de Clovis” by Louis-Félix Chabaud. Those interested in art can explore not only the history of the buildings, but also a specific work and its artist.
Another way to discover Louis-Félix Chabaud is through the virtual tour of his world. It offers a glimpse into his garden, bedroom and salon. Each room is a subject of the tour, complementing the exploration of the bas-relief with a view of the artist’s private surroundings.
Hiking and Nature Activities
Venelles is part of the protected Grand Site Concors-Sainte-Victoire, which extends across 17 municipalities. For a longer hike, the Sentier du Collet Redon is a specific option: it is graded easy, marked in blue and 11.5 kilometres long. It starts at car park 5 in the Parc des sports, opposite the Centre Aquatique Sainte-Victoire. The trail length and named starting point help you plan this route as a separate outing.
A shorter alternative with a different focus is the Sentier nature Arsène. This educational walk is 1.5 kilometres long and focuses on Provençal biodiversity. The two routes therefore differ both in their stated length and in their focus: the Collet Redon is described as a hiking trail, while nature education is at the heart of Arsène. Arsène Santé is designated as a suitable walk in the Parc des sports for people with reduced mobility.
The Parc des sports Maurice Daugé also has an orienteering course. This free-to-access recreational facility features several dozen permanently installed markers and orienteering posts. The Centre aquatique Sainte-Victoire offers a multi-purpose pool with a balneotherapy area. These activities offer a different focus from the trails: here, the emphasis is on outdoor orienteering or spending time in the water.
If you are choosing between the two trails described above, their distances provide a clear comparison: 11.5 kilometres for the Sentier du Collet Redon and 1.5 kilometres for the Sentier nature Arsène. Check route and access information before your visit, as it may change.
