Roumoules – Landscape and Village History
Accommodation in Roumoules
Roumoules was originally built on a well-situated hillside between the Peyrouvier ravine and the Colostre River. The village offers several concrete points of interest for planning your trip: a rural landscape, a mountain biking route through the village, and historic landmarks ranging from a wall fountain to a Christmas nativity scene.
Landscape and Rural Character
Around two-thirds of Roumoules’ land is used mainly for growing grain and lavandin; the remainder consists of woodland or heathland. Together with its hillside location between the ravine and the river, this mix shapes the character of the destination. If you value both cultivated land and woodland and heathland when choosing where to stay, these features can help guide your plans.
Mountain Biking Route and Road Connections
The “Les Cabanons du plateau à VTT” mountain biking route passes through Roumoules, following Rue Grande through the village. This makes the village crossing part of a specific route that you can factor into your plans for a mountain biking stay.
The D952 departmental road is also relevant for travelling to the area and finding your way around it. It connects Roumoules with Riez and Moustiers-Sainte-Marie, and provides access towards the Gorges du Verdon and Lac de Sainte-Croix. Check road conditions before setting out. The D952 and the mountain biking route offer different reference points for planning: one for road travel, the other for a cycling excursion.
Fountain, Church and Christmas Nativity Scene
The Fontaine de la République is a wall fountain featuring a bust of Marianne, inaugurated in 1895. Its history also includes its original water supply: springs fed the fountain through a Gallo-Roman stone channel that had previously supplied the Château. The monument thus combines a visible form with an older technical history.
Roumoules’ church is dedicated to Saint Peter in Chains. It was probably originally the chapel of a monastery, or a former priory dependent on Lérins Abbey. Roumoules’ nativity scene is displayed in the church every year around Christmas. Its figures are made of porcelain, measure 40 to 75 centimetres tall, and wear regional costumes. If seeing the nativity scene is important to your trip plans, check in advance what visiting options are available around Christmas.
La Croix and the Village’s History
Another historic landmark is La Croix: it was erected in 1874 on Villeneuve’s former threshing floor, in line of sight of the church and beside the municipal road connecting to Saint Martin and Les Saintes Maries. Its former location and alignment with the church set it apart from the fountain and nativity scene.
It is thought that La Croix was the starting point for processions to bless the harvest or pray for rain. This interpretation remains a supposition. Your trip plans can therefore focus on a range of things: the rural landscape, a mountain biking route through Roumoules, or the village’s historic landmarks.
