Peyruis lies at the foot of densely wooded hills on the right bank of the Durance. Old-town lanes, fountains, castle remains and paths through olive groves give the town a character shaped by history and landscape. When planning your trip, you can choose between the buildings and fountains in the town center and the described hiking and mountain biking routes. The specific details range from individual historic sights to a five-hour circular hike.

Castle Remains, Fountains and the Old Town

A monumental keep, the remains of towers and fortification walls have survived from the former castle. The keep was converted into a dovecote; the walls form terraced gardens known as “Banquets.” From the castle site, the view stretches across the surrounding hills, the old town and the plain to the orchards and cultivated land in the Durance Valley. Here, the architectural traces of the former castle meet a view that also takes in the valley’s agricultural landscape.

Eight fountains line the winding lanes of the old town. They include the Parlatan fountain, which was rebuilt in 1815. Created in 2022, “La Balade des Fontaines” leads visitors to the fountains and tells the story of Peyruis. This makes it possible to explore the fountains and the town’s history as a connected theme, rather than treating them as separate stops.

A medieval gateway known as “Juiverie” recalls a Jewish merchant community from the 13th and 14th centuries. The parish church of Saint-Nicolas also brings together several historical periods: it features Gothic elements from the 15th century, colorful stained-glass windows dating from the 16th to the 19th century, and numerous paintings. The wall paintings are considered representative of the 20th century; there are also reliquary busts of Saint Roch and Saint Nicholas. Those interested in the town’s history will find varied evidence here, from the medieval gateway to the church’s furnishings.

Chapels and Local Heritage

The Chapelle Saint-Roch dates from 1720–1721. The chapel is used for art exhibitions and musical performances and is generally open on weekends; restoration work was under way there in May 2026.

Local products promoted by Peyruis include fruit, olive oil and nougat. These add an agricultural and culinary dimension to the town, without implying that any particular tastings, markets or events are available.

Hiking and Enjoying the Landscape

At Champ de Gau, terraced land with stone retaining walls invites visitors to stroll; numerous springs characterize this area. The Tour des Iscles passes through olive groves and fields. From a rocky outcrop above the village of Peyruis, it offers views of the Durance Valley. Here, the landscape and valley views are the focus.

For a hike with clearly specified duration and elevation details, the Tour de Praconteau provides a useful comparison: this waymarked circular route is rated difficult, is 14 kilometers long, gains 500 meters in elevation and takes five hours. It starts beside the town hall, first passes through the old town and then heads through olive groves toward Collet de Piozin. It also crosses the wooded Massif de Peyruis, which is recognized as a ZNIEFF site (Zone naturelle d’intérêt écologique, faunistique et floristique). The details on duration, elevation gain and difficulty clearly distinguish this route from the landscape-focused sections of the Tour des Iscles.

Another option is the “Autour de Tourdeaux” mountain biking loop. It starts at the ruins of Peyruis Castle and follows a long trail to the Chapelle d’Augès, then on to Jas de Sigalette. These named waypoints indicate the route; check trail conditions before setting out. This gives you a choice of hikes with different described focuses, as well as a mountain biking loop, when planning your trip.
