Discover Mane
Accommodation in Mane
Mane brings together traces of different eras with a section of the Way of St. James and a lively winter tradition. The citadel in the village, the “Ronde des crèches” and the route to Santiago de Compostela offer different focuses for your stay. There are also gardens, collections and historic architecture. If you are looking for a hotel in Mane, you can start by considering which of these themes matter for your trip.
Citadel and nativity scene tradition
At the heart of the village of Mane stands the citadel, a feudal fortification dating from the 12th century. Its location in the village and medieval origins give your visit a clear historical context: this is a fortification, not a later château. The Church of Saint-André offers another way to explore the village’s history. In winter, it presents the lively “Ronde des crèches” tradition.
The nativity scene features 25 figures and has the largest number of old santons in the département; the santons are classified. Its date can also be determined from a specific detail: the clothing of the notable couple reflects the fashion of the July Monarchy, dating the nativity scene to 1837. If you would like to visit Mane for this winter tradition, check the presentation dates before your trip.
On the Way of St. James through Mane
The Way of St. James to Santiago de Compostela passes through Mane. Stage 8 runs through the village between Forcalquier and Saint-Michel-l’Observatoire Lincel, following the Via Domitia. Both endpoints and the route’s historical orientation are therefore specified. The stage offers many opportunities to discover religious and rural heritage. It will appeal to travellers who want to combine their journey with a specific route and these heritage themes; no walking time or stage length is provided.
Château architecture and park
The Château de Sauvan adds an 18th-century château to the medieval themes. Construction began in 1718 for M. de Forbin, based on a design attributed to Jean-Baptiste Franque, but the château was never completed. The park retains its system of terraces, several pools, parts of the statues and some fine trees. A large pool lies to the west of the château. You can therefore explore the estate not only through its architecture but also through the surviving elements of its landscape design.
Guided tours of the park and château are offered at Château de Sauvan. If a tour is important to your travel plans, check the current visitor arrangements in advance. The château’s history and the visit today are two different aspects: the estate was never completed, while the tours include both the park and the château.
Salagon: gardens, history and collections
The Prieuré de Salagon is an important medieval complex in Haute-Provence. The estate includes a 12th-century Romanesque church, a Renaissance residence and ethnobotanical gardens. These gardens are designed according to ethnobotanical principles and arranged to reflect the site’s historic agricultural use. They include 1,700 cultivated plants.
The historical perspective also reaches far back: the site documents 2,000 years of settlement, from the Neolithic period to medieval monastic life. The Musée de Salagon also presents both past and present culture in Provençal society. As a research, exhibition and events centre, it connects these themes with collections on rural life in Haute-Provence, including objects, tools and accounts of agricultural traditions. Visitors with a particular interest in garden culture will find a different focus here than at the feudal citadel or along the Way of St. James.
Getting there and planning your trip
Mane is easily accessible by car via nearby main roads. The village is 3 km from Forcalquier on the D4100 between Apt and Forcalquier, and on the D13 towards Manosque; Manosque is 20 km away. These details help you place Mane in the regional road network. As road conditions can change, check your route before setting off.
The château park, gardens and collections offer further highlights in architecture, plants and regional history. Plan your trip around the themes you would like to experience, and check current visitor arrangements for seasonal presentations or guided tours.
