For a trip to Mallefougasse-Augès, hiking, cycling and the village’s history offer practical starting points. The village of Mallefougasse is considered medieval and lies at the foot of Montagne de Lure. There are numerous hiking and cycling routes through Montagne de Lure from Mallefougasse.

Hiking Trails and Cycling at Montagne de Lure

The “Bas col et chapelle d’Augès” hike leads to Bas Col and on to Chapelle d’Augès. On the return, it offers a view of the village of Mallefougasse and Montagne de Lure.

The difficult Montagne de Lure circular cycling route (Cycling Route No. 5) passes through Mallefougasse-Augès. It is 86.3 kilometres long and takes about five hours; both the ascent and descent are 1,710 metres. Difficulty, distance and elevation gain together provide a guide for planning your own route.

When choosing between these examples, different considerations come to the fore: the hike is defined by Bas Col, the chapel and the view of the village and mountain on the return. The cycling loop can be assessed by its length, duration and elevation gain.

Landscape and Character

The area of Mallefougasse covers 1,971 hectares; in 2018, around 1,900 hectares were recorded as natural and semi-natural areas. These include forests, garrigue, meadows and certain heterogeneous agricultural areas. Garrigue refers to Mediterranean scrubland. These figures show that natural and semi-natural areas made up the majority of the area in 2018.

Church Architecture and Village History

The parish church of Saint-Jean-Baptiste preserves a choir from the first period of Romanesque architecture, with a cul-de-four vault. In church architecture, a cul-de-four is a semicircular, half-dome-shaped vault. The choir is the liturgical area around the altar; its classification as early Romanesque architecture and the shape of its vault describe different aspects of this part of the church.

The Au Pied Du Mur club premises open one Sunday morning a month, so that visitors can discover or rediscover the historical treasures of Mallefougasse and Montlaux. If you are planning a visit, check the opening date in advance.

The contemporary dance performance “Les lavandières” was scheduled for Thursday, 6 August 2026, at 8 p.m. by the washhouse.

At the Fête du pain on 17 May 2025, from 9 a.m., bread and pizza baked in the medieval bread oven were sold. The event also included a small market of local producers. Participants could bake or reheat their own food in the oven and join a communal meal in the village square. The two dated events represent different formats: a communal village festival and a contemporary dance performance.
