Entrevaux brings together fortifications and a citadel with sacred architecture, museums and olive-growing culture. The fortifications and citadel are classified as Monuments historiques. In 2023, Entrevaux received the “Plus Beaux Villages de France” label; it is also a stop on the Route des Villages et Cités de Caractère. Anyone planning a stay will find several distinct ways to explore the area’s history and local heritage—from architecture and collections to landscape and craftsmanship.

Fortifications and Cathedral

A clear architectural connection can be seen at Notre-Dame-de-l’Assomption Cathedral: it has been integrated into Entrevaux’s fortifications since the late 17th century. Sacred architecture and fortifications are therefore not simply two separate subjects. The cathedral is part of the complex, whose protected status also covers the citadel. When exploring the historic townscape, you can therefore focus on both aspects: the fortifications themselves and the way an important religious building is integrated into this ensemble.

Two Museums, Two Distinct Focuses

The Musée de la Moto arranges its collection across three levels by period. On display are models from 1910 to 1948, from the 1950s and 1960s, and from the 1970s and 1980s. In total, the museum displays almost 100 motorcycles that are in working order. The chronological arrangement makes the collection’s range easy to follow: rather than viewing the motorcycles as a single group, you can distinguish between the different periods of the 20th century.

The Musée de la Poudrière offers a different perspective on the town’s history, tracing Entrevaux’s military past. One specific measure of this is the 58 m² chamber, which could hold nine tonnes of gunpowder. This detail links the room’s dimensions with its capacity at the time, adding an insight into the powder magazine to the broader picture of the fortifications. Together, the motorcycle museum and the Musée de la Poudrière offer a clear choice between a collection arranged by period and a museum focused on the town’s military history.

Olive Mills and Landscape

Entrevaux’s rural heritage is also among its points of interest. The Sentier les Moulins d’Entrevaux combines an interpretation trail and an app to help you explore the village’s natural and rural heritage. The Moulins d’Entrevaux also include an oil mill that is still in operation. Olive trees near Entrevaux are grown on terraces and shape the landscape. The Aglandau variety is noteworthy for the flavour of its oil: it is widespread in Alpes-de-Haute-Provence and produces an oil with green, fruity notes. This information relates to the wider region, not exclusively to Entrevaux.

Plan Your Market Visit and Journey

From April to October, the weekly market takes place every Friday morning from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Place Moreau. As this is a seasonal event, check the specific market dates before travelling. For rail travel, Entrevaux station is on the Nice–Digne line operated by Chemins de Fer de Provence, also known as Train des Pignes. Check the timetable before setting off. This lets you plan around two practical details—a seasonal market morning and the rail connection—separately, without tying them to a particular day of your stay.

Another View of the Citadel

The citadel also comes into view from the road at Col des Félines: the first hairpin bends offer a view of it. This viewpoint offers a different perspective from the museums and architectural details in the town. When planning your visit, you can therefore choose between several areas of interest: the history of the fortifications and cathedral, the museums’ different subjects, or the rural heritage of mills and olive growing. The market and railway line add practical travel-planning details to these interests.
