Mouterre-Silly: Culture, History and Hiking
Accommodation in Mouterre-Silly
Mouterre-Silly offers several historical perspectives for a trip: protected buildings, religious traditions, traces of everyday life and a hiking trail with views of the surrounding slopes. You can focus on architectural history and heritage protection, discover the Chapel of Saint-Mandé and its distinctive details, or plan a hike on the Grand Sentier Sacré. The themes range from precisely defined heritage protection areas to Neolithic remains and views of the landscape.
Churches and châteaux: different areas of protection
The Church of Notre-Dame de Chasseignes is classified in its entirety as a historic monument. Protection also covers the land belonging to the church and the archaeological remains it contains.
The Château de la Fuye dates from the 17th century; its architectural features include moats and dovecotes. The listing protects the entire château, including its outbuildings, hydraulic system and surviving archaeological remains. The protection notice is dated 15 December 2023.
At the Château de la Bâtie, protection is more narrowly defined: since 23 December 1969, only the portal has been listed as a historic monument; the other buildings are excluded. Unlike at La Fuye, the listing here therefore does not extend to the entire château complex. The three areas of protection can thus be compared: the church and its grounds, the entire Château de la Fuye complex and the single portal at La Bâtie.
Pilgrimage, ornament and everyday life
The Chapel of Saint-Mandé was one of three pilgrimage sites in the Loudunais. Dating from the 12th century, it features palmettes in different designs—ornamental forms reminiscent of palm leaves. The chapel also bears graffiti left by craftsmen, including depictions of tools and symbols of various trades. Religious history, ornament and traces of craftsmanship give this place several distinct historical points of reference.
The washhouse at Braizé, near the village of Insay, draws attention to the social history of everyday life. Historically, women met there to wash their families’ laundry. It was therefore not only a place of work but also a meeting place. This perspective complements the churches and châteaux with an example of shared everyday experience.
Hilltop and hiking trail
The Church of Saint-Maximin stands on a hilltop that rises prominently above the surrounding area. Here, the setting in the landscape takes centre stage: its elevated position provides a landmark in the landscape alongside the architectural details of the other buildings.
The Grand Sentier Sacré begins in Mouterre-Silly and is a hiking trail. It connects Neolithic remains with views of the surrounding slopes. This gives it a different focus from the individual buildings: the route brings prehistoric traces and landscape views together, while the churches and châteaux chiefly draw attention to heritage protection, architecture and historical use.
