In Migné-Auxances, the themes range from an extensive collection and sacred art to medieval architectural history and a river landscape. If you plan your stay around your interests, these different highlights offer a clear guide: historical objects, frescoes, former estates and wetlands each have their own character.

Collection at the Musée Manuel

Since 1977, the Musée Manuel has exhibited the collector’s finds across 2,000 m² of exhibition space. The collection includes historic cars and toys, as well as velocipedes, tractors, military equipment, gramophones, dolls and curiosities. The items specifically mentioned include a 1912 Renault AX, a 1924 fire engine, a Sikorsky helicopter and a Ford Model T. Cars are not the only focus: the different groups of objects offer several points of interest, from vehicles to toys and everyday items. The range is especially clear in the two dated vehicles: the Renault AX dates from 1912, and the fire engine from 1924.

Église Sainte-Croix: A Long History and Frescoes

Église Sainte-Croix is mentioned as early as 989. A tradition is associated with its reconstruction: according to the account, a cross appeared on December 17, 1826, after which the present-day church was rebuilt. Marie Baranger’s frescoes mark much later dates. She created them in the choir in 1933 and in the arms of the transept in 1956. This makes it possible to distinguish between the building’s early mention, the reported event and two dated periods of artistic decoration.

Château d’Auxances and Historic Estates

Château d’Auxances is a fortified castle and now serves as a Carmelite convent. Its square keep preserves evidence of medieval building phases. The château lies on the valley floor, in a bend of the Auxance and a little outside the center of Migné. The built-up area of Migné is also located in a bend of the Auxance; the château’s position on the valley floor and its distance from the town center are additional distinguishing features.

Other historic landmarks include Domaine de Malaguet and Manoir de Salvert. Malaguet was a former fief first mentioned in 1328. The estate includes an old chapel that may date from the 17th century. Manoir de Salvert is now a convent of the Filles de la Sainte-Vierge. Together with Château d’Auxances, which also serves as a convent today, these sites illustrate the distinction between the historic estates and their current religious use.

Stone Quarrying and the Landscape Along the Auxance

Stone quarrying is also part of the area’s history: it dates back to Roman times in Migné-Auxances and was later carried out underground, including at Les Lourdines. Stone from Les Lourdines was used to build the Gare d’Orsay in Paris. The history of locally sourced material thus leads to a specific building in the French capital.

Along the Auxance, Migné-Auxances encompasses a variety of natural landscapes across 2,900 hectares: a valley, wet meadows, farmland and calcareous grasslands. The Sentier des Méandres de l’Auxance follows the river and includes an educational trail about the wetlands. The wet meadows and the trail offer two specific points of interest for exploring the area’s natural environment.

You can choose your destination based on your interests without treating the different themes as interchangeable.
