Key highlights of a trip to Antigny include the Église Notre-Dame, with its Romanesque architecture and murals; the Gallo-Roman finds from Gué-de-Sciaux; and the La Vigne aux Moines circular trail. The Lanterne des Morts adds to the historical sights. Which of these you focus on depends on whether you are mainly interested in architectural history, archaeological finds or hiking.

Romanesque church and murals

The Église Notre-Dame d’Antigny is a single-nave Romanesque church dating from the 12th century. Its three-part, flat ambulatory dates from the 13th or 14th century. The building therefore reflects different phases of construction: the Romanesque nave and the later ambulatory belong to different centuries. A 15th-century cycle of frescoes survives in the north side chapel. The church’s murals include the Annunciation, the Nativity, the Last Judgment, and the depiction of the Three Living and the Three Dead. The subjects range from individual biblical scenes to a depiction that sets the living and the dead against one another. The architecture and murals offer different ways to explore the church’s history: through its design and through the subjects of its paintings.

Gallo-Roman finds from Gué-de-Sciaux

The Dépôt visitable d’Antigny presents discoveries from the Gallo-Roman site of Gué-de-Sciaux. On display are architectural sculptures from a 2nd-century AD Gallo-Roman temple, as well as remains of the public baths at Gué-de-Sciaux. Temple architecture and public baths thus represent different aspects of the finds. The Gallo-Roman vicus of Gué-de-Sciaux covered an area of 25 hectares. Two sections on the left bank of the Gartempe together cover 2,000 square metres. These figures refer to different areas: the whole vicus and the two sections on the left bank.

Hiking on La Vigne aux Moines

The La Vigne aux Moines circular trail, Loop No. 17, is a moderately difficult 11-kilometre hike. The start and finish are at the Pont d’Antigny. After crossing the bridge at Antigny, the route follows the Gartempe for three kilometres. The 11-kilometre distance refers to the entire loop; the riverside section is one part of the route. The moderate difficulty rating is also a separate guide for planning. Check the current condition of the trail before setting out, as conditions may change.

Lanterne des Morts and guided tours

The Lanterne des Morts stands on the Place d’Antigny and was listed as a historic monument in 1884. It is free to visit; guided tours are available only by prior booking. Check the visiting arrangements before your trip. As part of La Vallée des fresques, guided tours are offered at the Église d’Antigny and the Chapel of Jouhet. Visitor numbers for this offer are deliberately limited to protect the fragile heritage. If you are interested in a guided tour, check the latest information in advance. The Lanterne and La Vallée des fresques offer different ways to visit: a free visit here, with advance booking required for guided tours, and guided tours at two heritage sites there.
