When considering Scillé as a travel destination, you can start by choosing between two perspectives: landscape and water, or architectural and land-use history. The “Les deux sources” and “Chemins creux et fermes fortifiées” walking routes each have a different focus; other highlights include Saint Hilaire Church, the Logis de La Verdonnière and the Moulin à drap. This makes it possible to plan a themed trip without grouping all the sights under a single theme.

Water and landscape in Scillé

The “Les deux sources” walking route offers panoramic views as far as the Atlantic coast. Its features include the source of the Ruisseau des Fougères stream and the Fontaine de la Bource. The viewpoint and water sources provide two different points of interest along the same route: one directs your gaze into the distance, while the others draw attention to individual features of the water landscape.

At Les Fougères, a spring flows year-round. It feeds a well, a washhouse and a livestock watering trough. These three uses are clearly distinct: the spring is their common source, while the well, washhouse and trough each serve a different purpose. This makes it possible to consider water here both as part of the landscape and in terms of its specific uses.

At La Crétinière, the Ruisseau de La Crétinière stream rises and marks the boundary between the municipalities of Scillé and Le Busseau. This gives the stream a different significance from the water sources at Les Fougères: it is also a boundary between two municipalities. Those interested in the landscape will therefore find not only springs and wells, but also a watercourse with a municipal function.

Buildings and history

Saint Hilaire Church was devastated during the Wars of Religion, rebuilt in 1600 and given a flat-ended choir. The year and the architectural form represent different aspects: 1600 marks the rebuilding, while the flat-ended choir describes the shape of the chancel. The church thus brings together a historical event and an architectural feature.

The Logis de La Verdonnière dates from 1619. Its layout is arranged around an enclosed square courtyard with a well. The courtyard thus defines the spatial form of the logis: rather than a single building, the focus is on a complex arranged around an enclosed courtyard. The well is part of this courtyard complex.

The fortified Saint Marc farm is part of the “Chemins creux et fermes fortifiées” walking route. Only one tower remains of the former estate; it protects the entrance. The estate’s wall was flanked by four towers. Comparing the original complex with the surviving tower illustrates the difference between its former scale and the architectural remains that have been preserved.

The Moulin à drap adds the history of production to this architectural story. It initially produced cloth and was later converted to flour production. The change from clothmaking to flour production shows that the mill’s use changed over time. This makes the focus here not just a building, but also the succession of two different production purposes.

Comparing the walking routes

The “Chemins creux et fermes fortifiées” walking route starts at the church square and passes through fields bordered by hedges. Together with the fortified Saint Marc farm, this landscape and estate shape the route’s themes. The starting point at the church square also provides a clear landmark for the beginning of the route.

The main factor in choosing between the two walking routes is their respective focus: “Les deux sources” combines panoramic views as far as the Atlantic coast with water features, while “Chemins creux et fermes fortifiées” takes in the fields and the fortified Saint Marc farm. The church, logis and mill add to the picture of Scillé’s architectural and land-use history.
