As a destination, Saint-Martin-de-Saint-Maixent brings together local history, trails and nature. The Pont de Pallu, the “Sur les pas d’Edmond Proust” hiking trail and the “Les chemins creux” educational trail offer different points of interest. The village’s rural heritage and water features add to these attractions. Travelers who plan their trip around specific themes will find both historical connections and trails that highlight the landscape and local history.

Pont de Pallu and Historic Trails

The Pont de Pallu is a 50-meter-long footbridge made of flat limestone slabs. It lies on a Roman road and connects Saint-Martin-de-Saint-Maixent with Nanteuil. Its construction, location and purpose are all connected: the bridge is both a crossing between two places and part of a historic route.

Historically, mules used the bridge on their way to numerous mills. Grain was taken to La Rochelle, with salt transported back in the opposite direction. This trading history adds another point of interest to the structure, alongside its function as a footbridge. For travelers interested in local history, the connection between the two communities and the former movement of goods reveal two different aspects of the Pont de Pallu.

Trails Through History

The “Sur les pas d’Edmond Proust” hiking trail focuses on the history of the local resistance. One specific event from this history took place on February 18, 1944: after narrowly escaping arrest, Edmond Proust hid at the Logis de la Bidolière. The trail gives this subject a particular focus, while the event provides a precise date in the history of the local resistance.

The village’s rural heritage is also part of its character. In 2004, the municipality acquired the Four à Pain de Charchenay complex, including its well. It was restored as rural heritage without protected status. One Sunday morning each month, local residents bake bread, brioche, cakes and various prepared dishes there. The oven can therefore be appreciated not only as restored rural heritage, but also as the setting for a recurring local baking tradition.

A trail leads to the Fontaine et Lavoir des GenĂŞts. There, a spring feeds water into the washbasin; benches are part of the well-maintained grounds. The Fontaine de Putais has been restored and supplemented with a small resting area for walkers. The two sites have different points of interest: at Les GenĂŞts, the focus is on the spring, washbasin and benches, while at Putais it is the added resting area.

Nature and Outdoor Activities

The “Les chemins creux” educational trail uses information panels to teach visitors about local flora and fauna. The panels were created by students from Émile-Naslin School. The trail thus combines nature themes with a tangible contribution from the local school. Saint-Martin-de-Saint-Maixent is also situated on the Sèvre Niortaise and the Ruisseau de Rochetan; both waterways are part of the local landscape.

The Aire de loisirs du Vallon has a signposted fitness trail with about ten obstacles for users aged seven and up. The recreation area also includes a children’s playground. These facilities differ from the themed hiking and educational trails: here, exercise and play are the focus, while the “Les chemins creux” trail introduces visitors to local flora and fauna.
