Accommodation in Mazerolles
When looking for hotels in Mazerolles, the character of the place can help shape your choice of destination. Medieval heritage, a church with Romanesque and Gothic features, archery and the Charente countryside offer a range of different experiences.
History at the Motte
La Motte de Mazerolles is mentioned as early as 1273 in the fief register of Guillaume de Blaye, Bishop of Angoulême. This means the motte is documented as far back as the 13th century. A footbridge, an observation tower, steps and landscaping have been completed at La Motte Féodale. The site was inaugurated in June 2024.
Romanesque and Gothic building phases
The oldest, Romanesque part of the church in Mazerolles preserves a nave dating from the 12th century, ending in a small apse. In the 15th century, the church was extended with a second, Gothic nave. This reveals two distinct building phases: the Romanesque section and the later Gothic extension. The interior also has its own distinctive details: the church contains a stone altar depicting the Paschal Lamb. Above it is a painted wooden altarpiece dating from the 18th or early 19th century.
Archery in the countryside
L’Arc d’Or offers outdoor archery on a 4.5-hectare site, with 62 realistic 3D targets. An introductory archery session is available from age five; the bow and draw weight are adjusted to each person. The details of the introductory session may change, so check the offering before your trip. A course for mounted archery, listed as new for 2025, is 380 metres long and has twelve targets. It is reserved for horse owners with their own equipment. Check before your trip whether this activity is currently available.
Hiking and countryside
The Mazerolles hiking trail starts at La Motte and runs through the Charente countryside. This puts hiking and archery side by side as different outdoor activities: the trail takes you through the countryside, while L’Arc d’Or offers a specific archery experience. Signal de l’Arbre, also known as Signal de Mazerolles, is 345 metres high.
Local cuisine and events
The La Ferme Assaisonnée inn serves food produced on its own farm, including foie gras, duck breast, free-range chicken and homemade desserts. Mazerolles also offers leisure activities and hosts events such as the Fête de la Motte. If you would like to plan your trip around an event, check its date in advance.
