Several cultural and historical themes are central to a stay in Friville: sacred architecture, the Vimeu region’s industry, and the former uses of Château d’Escarbotin. In Friville-Escarbotin, Église Saint-Étienne and the Musée des Industries du Vimeu tell different sides of local and regional history. The Saint-Hubert Chapel in Escarbotin adds its own founding story to this picture. Each theme offers a different focus, so you can plan your trip around your interests.

Industrial Heritage at the Musée des Industries du Vimeu

The Musée des Industries du Vimeu in Friville-Escarbotin presents the history of the Vimeu region’s small metalworking industry, as well as its locksmithing, fittings, and ironmongery industries. It thus connects a specific place with a regional theme: the focus is on several related trades, not just one industrial sector.

The exhibits include reconstructed workshops and collections of locks, padlocks, and chests. The collections span the 16th century to the present day. The museum therefore combines workshop displays with tangible objects, covering a period of several centuries. If you are particularly interested in crafts and industrial heritage, this combination offers a distinctive way to explore the history of the Vimeu.

The museum mainly welcomes groups of 15 or more by prior reservation. If you plan to visit, check the reservation arrangements before you travel.

From Château to Visitor Information Centre

The former Château d’Escarbotin has served different purposes over time. Its later uses included a workshop for fluted cylinders and a girls’ school. Today, it houses the Syndicat d’initiative du Vimeu industriel. This sequence connects the history of a former château with manufacturing, education, and its current role as a visitor information centre. If you would like to use the information centre, check current visiting arrangements in advance.

The Architectural History of the Church and Chapel

Several building phases can be distinguished at Église Saint-Étienne. The choir dates from the 15th century, and the nave was built in 1785. The bell tower was rebuilt in 1850 to plans by Monsieur Coulombel, an architect from Abbeville. These details concern different parts of the building and different events: the origins of the choir, the construction of the nave, and the tower’s reconstruction. Its architectural history therefore cannot be reduced to a single year.

The Saint-Hubert Chapel in Escarbotin has its own timeline. Étienne de Rousse and Françoise d’Ailly founded it in 1635. It was later rebuilt: the work took place in 1839, and the chapel was consecrated on July 7, 1840. The chapel subsequently became an auxiliary chapel of the parish of Friville. Its founding, reconstruction, consecration, and ecclesiastical role mark different stages in its history.
