Sainte-Geneviève combines architectural history and a craft tradition with a named walking route and a recurring brocante. When choosing a hotel for your trip, these themes can help you sort out your interests: the church and fan making draw attention to the heritage, while the circular route and event offer other, clearly distinct focuses. Consider whether cultural history, a walking route, or an event date is especially important for your trip.

Church and Architectural History

The Church of Sainte-Geneviève is listed in France’s supplementary inventory of historic monuments. Its choir may date from the late 12th century. The nave was rebuilt in the 16th century, incorporating the south wall of the earlier building. The two details concern different parts of the building: the date for the choir remains tentative, while the nave’s rebuilding is dated more precisely.

Fan Making and Local History

In the 19th century, several fan makers lived in Sainte-Geneviève; the town’s fan production was known at all the royal courts of Europe. The former Lesieur-Lesbroussart fan factory is one of the few industrial witnesses to this activity in Sainte-Geneviève. This makes it possible to understand the local craft history through a specific former factory and the far-reaching renown of its production. For travellers interested in local history, this theme offers a different perspective from the church architecture.

Townscape and Landscape

With its brick-and-flint houses, Sainte-Geneviève is considered a typical town in southern Picardy. These building materials add a view of the town’s architecture to the church’s construction phases. Mont Sainte-Geneviève is part of the chalky Falaise du Thelle, so this named landform is also part of the destination’s setting.

Walking Route

One walking option is the 9.2-kilometre circular route “Sainte Geneviève et les hameaux de Cauvigny.” One of its highlights is the Bois de l'Hôtel Dieu. The route’s length gives you a concrete point of reference when planning a walk into your trip. Check the trail conditions before setting out.

Brocante in June

The well-known Sainte-Geneviève brocante takes place on the first Sunday of June each year. Around 300 exhibitors take part; visitor numbers may vary from one edition to another. If you want to plan your stay around the event, check the date of the relevant edition.

Historic Railway Line

The history of transport also has a clearly defined historical context. The Hermes–Beaumont railway line passed through Sainte-Geneviève and stopped at Sainte-Geneviève-Bonvillers station. It operated from 1879 to 1949 and is no longer in service. As part of local history, the former line complements the church and craft themes with a historic connection; it should not be confused with a current rail service.
