Saint-Leu-D'esserent offers two distinct ways to enjoy a stay: the architectural heritage of the priory and outdoor activities, from the water sports centre to paths along the Oise. If you are looking for a hotel in Saint-Leu-D'esserent, you can tailor the focus of your stay to your plans: would you like your visit to centre mainly on monastic architecture and local history, or are you more interested in activity and scenery? The following places show how these interests differ in practice.

Water, paths and activity

At the Base intercommunale de loisirs de Saint-Leu-d'Esserent, activities centred on water and nature take the spotlight. One specific feature is the pump track, designed for bicycles, BMX bikes, scooters, kick scooters and skateboards. It is a clear point of reference if you would like to include one of these activities in your stay.

The Parc de la Garenne has an educational trail and a fitness trail. The two offer different experiences: the educational trail provides opportunities to learn along the way, while the fitness trail is geared towards exercise. This gives you several options for outdoor activities without treating them as the same kind of outing.

The promenade along the Berges de l'Oise is open to the public free of charge all year round and is also suitable for cycling. More than two kilometres of walking paths run there along the former towpath between the Saint-Leu bridge and the barges. The former towpath gives the route a distinctive connection to how the area was once used. Check local conditions before setting out.

The Randonnée des Bâtisseurs offers a different perspective. It starts in Saint-Leu-d'Esserent or Saint-Maximin and links the extraction of the well-known limestone with the construction of buildings and religious structures. Unlike the paths along the Berges, this route focuses on the connection between stone and building history. If you choose a hike for its theme as well as its route, this distinction can be useful when planning.

At the water sports centre, you can meet members of the Club de Voile de Saint-Leu-d'Esserent. Check in advance for current arrangements, as membership and the organisation of activities may change.

The priory and local history

The Prieuré de Saint-Leu-d'Esserent is the focal point for the area's history. It has been listed as a historic monument since 1862. The surviving features include a fortified entrance gate, the walls of the former abbey with partly preserved wall walks and battlements, as well as remains of the cloister and refectory. There are also several rooms, including a remarkable chapter house, and underground spaces. Together, these features offer insight into different parts of the former monastic complex, from its fortifications to its communal spaces.

The priory can be visited during the European Heritage Days in September. Check the latest event dates before planning your visit.

The Cave Banvin adds an economic dimension to the story of the monastery. Built in the 12th and 13th centuries, it was used by the monks of the Cluniac Order to store and sell wine. It offers a different perspective from the surviving buildings of the priory: here, the focus is on storage and trade, while the priory's buildings reveal its architecture and layout. The Cave Banvin also opens to visitors during the European Heritage Days; check the latest dates in advance.

Another stop on a tour of local history is the Musée de la Guesdière. It displays a votive model, tools used by quarry workers and a collection about the Second World War. These subjects broaden the view beyond monastic architecture: the votive model, quarry work and wartime history represent different aspects of the collection.
