Churches, Nature and Endives in Romescamps
Romescamps offers a range of reasons to visit: the architectural history of Saint-Jean-Baptiste Church, the Notre-Dame Chapel in Carroix, named natural areas and seasonal endive sales. Those interested in historic architecture can explore two churches, each with its own building history; nature enthusiasts will find another focus in the names of the protected areas and the spider orchid. The farm shop adds a practical seasonal shopping opportunity to these themes.
Saint-Jean-Baptiste: Architecture and History
Saint-Jean-Baptiste Church was built at the turn of the 14th and 15th centuries. Its wooden and slate bell tower ends in a tall octagonal spire with two smaller spires. This offers two points of interest: the date when the church was built and the specific form of its bell tower. Its materials and silhouette are architectural details, while the date places the building in its historical context.
Beyond its architecture, the church is associated with a commandery of the Order of Malta, which it served. Remains of this commandery survive south of the church. This brings the church’s historical function and its connection to the commandery into focus, alongside its architectural history.
The Notre-Dame Chapel in Carroix
The Notre-Dame Chapel in Carroix is an example of the use of bricks from three different building periods. Its nave was rebuilt at the end of the 1820s. The choir is the oldest part and, according to Graves, dates to 1761. The two dates refer to different parts of the building: 1761 to the choir, and the rebuilding to the nave.
The histories of the two churches can therefore be viewed in different ways. For Saint-Jean-Baptiste, the focus is on the building’s construction at the turn of the 14th and 15th centuries; for the Notre-Dame Chapel, specific dates are associated with individual parts of the building. This allows you to distinguish between dating a church building as a whole and tracing the history of its parts.
Natural Areas and Orchid Grasslands
The ZNIEFF “Les Larris de Gourchelles-Romescamps et de Quincampoix-Fleuzy” includes Romescamps and covers 449.02 hectares. Among its rare habitats are orchid grasslands where the spider orchid, Ophrys araignée (Ophrys sphegodes), grows. The Natura 2000 site “Vallée de la Bresle” also includes Romescamps.
For planning your trip, the two natural areas offer different points of interest: the ZNIEFF combines a precise area figure with orchid grasslands, while the Natura 2000 site is linked to Romescamps through the name Vallée de la Bresle. If you are interested in plants, the rare spider orchid offers a specific focus within this nature theme.
Endives Direct from the Farm
