Quesmy: Architectural History and Agriculture
Accommodation in Quesmy
As accommodation, Le château de Quesmy is a guesthouse with five rooms. This lets you separate the question of suitable accommodation from the local points of interest and decide whether historic architecture, agriculture, or primarily the type of accommodation matters for your trip.
Architectural history of the Église Saint-Médard
Apart from the façade, which was renovated in the 17th and 18th centuries, and the side aisles of the nave, the Église Saint-Médard is a single-period building dating from the third quarter of the 12th century. The dating therefore applies to the single-period building, not to every one of the parts mentioned. The side aisles are the areas beside the nave; comparing them with the renovated façade helps distinguish the different construction phases.
The church was classified as a Monument historique by decree dated December 11, 1912. This date relates to the protection decision, not to the construction period. Two different points of reference therefore provide the chronology: the construction of the single-period building in the 12th century and its later classification as a protected monument.
The rebuilding is also part of the church’s history: during the First World War, two-thirds of the Église Saint-Médard was destroyed. The architect André Collin rebuilt it between 1925 and 1928. Together with the renovated parts, this gives a sequence of medieval construction, later alterations, wartime destruction, and rebuilding. If you use historic architecture as a selection criterion, you’ll find a building history with several clearly distinguishable stages here.
Agriculture and visits
The Ferme des Eglisières is an agricultural operation combining arable farming and livestock farming. It includes a versatile butcher’s shop and a point of sale for meat from its own farm. This adds specific offerings to the farm’s agricultural profile: arable and livestock farming provide the framework, while the butcher’s shop and meat sales make the connection to its own farm tangible. Arable farming means growing crops, while livestock farming means raising animals.
Educational visits to the Ferme des Eglisières are available by prior appointment. If you’d like to plan such a visit, arrange a time before you arrive. This lets you plan the farm visit in advance rather than assume that you can visit without arranging it beforehand.
