Noailles: Nature and local history
Accommodation in Noailles
Noailles offers two distinct themes to help you plan your trip: the wooded Bois du Larris and a rich local history. The natural area lies in the heart of Noailles. Saint-Lucien Church is on the northeastern edge of the municipality, on the slopes of the Bois du Larris in the Longvillers district. The Relais de Blainville, Boncourt and historical information about local businesses add further dimensions to the area's history.
Hiking trails in the Bois du Larris
The Bois du Larris is a wooded natural area. Its three hiking trails differ in length and color coding: the Sentier des Pics Verts is 0.8 kilometers long and marked in green, the Sentier des Écureuils is 2 kilometers long and marked in blue, and the Sentier des Chevreuils is 2.7 kilometers long and marked in red. The shortest trail is therefore well under half the length of the longest; the blue trail, at 2 kilometers, falls between the two. These distances make it easy to assess how long you would like your hike to be.
All three hiking trails have interpretive signs about the forest's flora and fauna. When choosing a trail, you can therefore consider both its length and the natural surroundings they all share. Trail conditions may change; check them before setting out.
Church, district and historic buildings
At Saint-Lucien Church, the north wall of the nave preserves masonry in a herringbone pattern, also known as opus spicatum. This building technique is associated with churches in the Beauvaisis dating from the 11th century. In the 16th century, a large chapel dedicated to the Virgin Mary was added on the south side of the choir, which was also given new vaults. Saint-Lucien thus brings together a distinctive masonry feature and a later expansion. This sequence provides a way to distinguish different building styles and additions.
The Relais de Blainville was built around 1753 along the new road between Calais and Paris. In 1838, the relais in Noailles was referred to as the “Relais de Blainville.” The historic buildings at Blainville have retained their authentic character. Before planning a visit, it is advisable to check their current condition.
Boncourt is a historic district of Noailles that has retained its identity. Alongside individual buildings, the district itself is another point of reference for the area's history.
The industrial history of Noailles
The Brosserie Thomas was founded in 1843 and established in a building constructed in 1818. The building was therefore already 25 years old when the Brosserie was founded.
Throughout the second half of the 19th century, Thomas Frères was one of Noailles's leading businesses and specialized in manufacturing toothbrushes.
