Béthisy-Saint-Martin brings together several themes that you can weigh differently when choosing a place to stay: the Chaussée Brunehaut, a cycling route along an ancient road; the La Sablonnière nature area; the Automne River; and historic buildings. If you are looking for a hotel, you can choose where to stay based on the interests that will shape your trip. Cycling, nature watching, a specified walking route and architectural history offer different areas of focus that can be considered separately when planning.

The Chaussée Brunehaut and the Automne

The Chaussée Brunehaut is an ancient Roman road that connected Senlis with Soissons. It passes through Béthisy-Saint-Martin and has now been converted into a cycling route. This brings together two perspectives on the same route: its historic link between the cities and its present-day use for cycling. When planning your trip, you can treat the cycling route as a separate focus from a walk or the historic buildings.

The Automne River also runs through the commune. Category 1 fishing is possible there. Check the applicable rules before fishing.

La Sablonnière: calcareous grassland and biodiversity

La Sablonnière, also known as L’Ourlet de Béthisy-Saint-Martin, is a 0.41-hectare municipal area of calcareous grassland with remarkable natural heritage. It was once a sports ground; the area has been returned to nature. The site is rich in fauna and flora. Lutetian limestone and the sands associated with it also create a challenging habitat for plants. Thermophilic species include Yellow Bartsia, Baltic Apiaceae and Monkey Orchid; the Western Green Lizard is also regularly observed there.

Access is via Rue Saint-Lazare and the path at number 325. A 3 km walk is specified for the visit. Check local conditions before setting out. This lets you treat the nature area as a separate part of your itinerary and take the specified walk into account when planning your time, without confusing it with the cycling route.

Church and Château de la Mothe

The Church of Saint-Martin was built around 1140 and has been listed as a historic monument since 1931. Its façade features a portal from the early 13th century, with colonnettes and mouldings. In front of it is a porch supported by two massive columns. These features add a specific example of the church’s façade design to its early architectural history.

The main construction phases of the Château de la Mothe date to the 17th and 19th centuries. Its façades and roofs have been partially protected as historic monuments since 16 December 1986. The château is privately owned.

Local archery tradition

The Jeu d’arc is also part of the town’s history: it dates from 1863. Every year, field archery at the Jeu d’arc draws numerous archers to Béthisy-Saint-Martin. Alongside cycling, the river and nature, this adds a recurring sporting activity as a distinct theme for your stay.
