Parfondeval reveals itself through its architectural history, rural landscape and former everyday work. The Église fortifiée Saint-Médard, the “La Maison des Outils d’Antan” museum and the interpretation trail each focus on a different aspect: a religious building, rural occupations around 1900 and points of interest around the village. Also worth seeing are the Protestant temple, the washhouse and the pond on the village square. Together, these places offer different perspectives on architecture and former ways of life and provisioning.

Church and Museum

Open year-round, the Église fortifiée Saint-Médard allows visitors to climb to the upper floor, where the watch and refuge chamber is located. Check the current visiting arrangements before your trip.

The “La Maison des Outils d’Antan” museum displays more than 2,000 objects collected at flea markets or donated. It offers insights into rural occupations practised around 1900. The collection and its theme thus present a different side of the village from the church visit: here, the focus is on working life and the objects associated with it. Visits are possible by prior reservation only; check the reservation arrangements in advance.

The Interpretation Trail

The interpretation trail through Parfondeval is 1.4 km long and classified as very easy. It includes around a dozen points of interest. This gives you both an idea of the route’s length and an impression of how many themed stops it includes.

At each stop along the trail, the free “Chouette Aventure” app offers mini-games that help visitors discover Parfondeval’s monuments and landscapes. Free audio guides for a narrated tour of Parfondeval are also available from the Relais de la Chouette. The mini-games and audio commentary offer different perspectives; check before your trip whether the app and audio guides are available.

Landscape, Buildings and Village History

Parfondeval’s rural surroundings include pastures, apple orchards and bocage landscapes. Typical of the Thiérache region, the houses here are built of red brick and have slate roofs. The pond on the village square is the last remnant of six former ponds. They were used to water livestock and as water reservoirs for firefighting—two specific functions that supported the village in the past.

The buildings also reflect different periods: the Église Saint-Médard was built in the mid-16th century, while the Protestant temple dates from 1858. Historically, the washhouse was a place used exclusively by women to wash clothes. The church, temple and washhouse therefore point to different aspects of the village’s history, without telling the same story.

Plan a Market Visit

In 2026, the Parfondeval market is scheduled for the first Saturday of each month. Local producers and craftspeople sell fresh produce to take away. Check the date that suits your visit before you travel.
