Key features of Berny-Rivière include its Romanesque church, the underground chapel of Chapeaumont, and former quarries with a military history. There are also several hiking options: a 5.9-kilometre circular route starting in the village and the long-distance GR12 trail, which passes through Berny-Rivière. You can plan your visit around architectural and military history, hiking, or a combination of these interests.

Church and architectural history

The church in Berny-Rivière is a Romanesque building. It was altered in 1552; after being damaged during the Huguenot period, it was restored in 1604. The style classification and the two dates can be considered separately: Romanesque describes the character of the building, while 1552 and 1604 date the alterations and restoration. The church was listed as a Monument historique by decree of 15 June 1927. This listing marks another point in its history, separate from the structural work carried out in the 16th and early 17th centuries.

The underground chapel of Chapeaumont

The underground chapel of Chapeaumont was built by combatants in three phases: in June 1916, in autumn 1916, and in January 1917. Among the approximately thirty underground chapels built by combatants during the First World War that still survive, it is considered the most spectacular in terms of its dimensions, layout, and quality of workmanship. The chapel and the bas-reliefs in the Carrière de Chapeaumont were listed as Monuments historiques by decree of 17 July 2000. The bas-reliefs, as part of this protected heritage, are therefore also of interest alongside the building’s history.

Former quarries and their history

The former quarries known as the Carrières de l’Infirmerie et du Premier Zouave date back to the Middle Ages. French troops used them as accommodation, or billets, from September 1914 to November 1918. Billeting means housing troops, and here specifies the purpose for which the quarries were used during this period. Numerous sculptures of soldiers and regimental inscriptions have been preserved there. The site thus brings together medieval origins, a clearly dated military use, and surviving depictions and inscriptions.

Hiking around Berny-Rivière

Le bois de Chapeaumont is a 5.9-kilometre circular hiking route that starts in Berny-Rivière. The long-distance GR12 trail also passes through the village and is part of the local network of hiking trails. The circular route offers a specific distance and starting point; the GR12 connects Berny-Rivière to the local trail network. From Berny-Rivière, a path climbs above the Aisne valley and then leads into the forests of Chapeaumont. This gives you both a circular walk with a stated distance and a long-distance trail that passes through the village. Check route details and trail conditions again before setting out if they are important to your plans.
