Saint-Pavace combines historic heritage with routes along the Sarthe. When planning your trip, it is worth considering buildings, visiting conditions and route features separately. This will help you understand the historical points of interest and pay attention to the specific version when choosing a circuit.

Historic heritage

The privately owned Château de Chêne-de-Cœur was listed as a Monument historique in 2016 and is open to visitors during the European Heritage Days. Check the dates before your trip if you plan to visit. Its historic listing and the opportunity to visit during this event period give you two specific points of reference for your visit.

La Cour is a former seigneurie whose buildings contain architectural features dating from the 15th or 16th century. Its former function and architectural features offer two different ways to explore the history of the place: one through the former seigneurie, the other through its building fabric. This makes it possible to understand La Cour in both historical and architectural terms.

The present-day parish church of Saint-Pavace has very old masonry. It is one of the sights on the Circuit au bord de la Sarthe, as is the Promenade du souvenir. Looking at the tour in terms of its destinations lets you connect the church and promenade as specific sights with your choice of route.

Routes along the Sarthe

Saint-Pavace has footpaths along the Sarthe. The municipality’s walking trail network also includes circuits for hiking, cycling and horse riding. If you plan to be active during your stay, this offers several options: a walk along the river or choosing a circuit to suit your activity. The specific route names and details will help you plan your trip.

The version of the Circuit au bord de la Sarthe described as including a chain ferry is 8 km long, takes about 2 hours and 20 minutes, and runs 75 percent on paths. It is marked in blue and designated as a marked route. The approximate duration gives you a time estimate; the length, proportion on paths and markings help you distinguish this version from other routes. The chain ferry is one of the specific features of this route.

By contrast, the 9.6 km version without the chain ferry can no longer be walked as shown because a path is inaccessible. It is therefore not an equally walkable alternative. Check the path conditions before your trip before deciding on this route.

Another route is the red-marked Circuit des moulins. It is 29 km long and runs between Neuville-sur-Sarthe and Saint-Pavace. It is therefore considerably longer than the 8 km version of the Circuit au bord de la Sarthe and is clearly identified by its two endpoints. When comparing routes, this lets you distinguish a longer route between two named places from the shorter circuit, for which an approximate duration and the proportion run on paths are provided.
