For your travel planning, Courgains combines its landscape and church history with a special place for finding your bearings. The GEOPOLE is on Butte du Teil, also known as Mont de la Garde; the Église Saint-Pierre-et-Saint-Paul adds an early historical date and distinctive features. There is also the Randonnée découverte de Courgains, which offers a panorama of the Butte. Each of these places adds its own emphasis: geographical orientation, church history, or a view of the landscape.

GEOPOLE on Butte du Teil

The GEOPOLE is at the summit of Butte du Teil, which is also called Mont de la Garde. Both names refer to the same hill, so you need not think of them as two different places. At the orientation table, a rhumb-line pointer shows the exact distance to a city and its location in relation to this spot. It thus combines distance and spatial positioning in a single display.

The GEOPOLE also includes an analemmatic sundial. To read the time, you have to move and position yourself. This makes it different to use from the orientation table: with the sundial, movement is part of reading the time, whereas the rhumb-line pointer shows a city’s distance and location. Two different functions therefore come together on the hill: geographical positioning and telling the time with a sundial that requires you to position yourself. For travelers interested in how instruments work, the GEOPOLE offers a concrete comparison between spatial orientation and a sundial.

Church history and features

The Église Saint-Pierre-et-Saint-Paul is dedicated to Saint Peter and Saint Paul and was already in existence in 1050. The choir contains an 18th-century carved and gilded stone altarpiece. The church and altarpiece therefore represent different periods: the church was already in existence in 1050, while the altarpiece dates from the 18th century.

Another distinctive feature is the seigneurial funeral drapery. This funerary painting runs all the way around the inside of the building, except for the choir. According to Bâtiments de France, it is considered quite rare. The choir is thus both the location of the altarpiece and the area excluded from the funeral drapery. These two details give the church interior different focal points: a single work in the choir and the painting’s course around the rest of the interior.

Panorama of the Butte

The Randonnée découverte de Courgains offers a panorama of Butte du Teil. The same hill thus appears in two different contexts: the GEOPOLE is at its summit, while the randonnée offers a view of the Butte. This is a helpful distinction for planning your trip. If you want to focus on the landscape, the panorama is a specific point of interest; for cultural history, the church offers its history and features.
