Bonnétable: Gardens, Culture and History
Accommodation in Bonnétable
During a stay in Bonnétable, gardens, historic landmarks and trails through nature come together. The town’s character is reflected in three distinct sites: the Château park, the Jardin Potager and the Parc public. There is also a museum, the Église Saint-Sulpice and two walking routes with different durations and distances. You can tailor your stay to garden culture, local history or outdoor activity.
Gardens and parks
The park of the Château de Bonnétable has two ponds and winding avenues. Several rustic-style garden structures complement the grounds, and the ruins of the former Marteau mill have also been preserved. As you walk through the park, you’ll encounter both landscape features and built elements.
The Jardin Potager de Bonnétable offers a different focus: its 13,000 m² include a fruit-variety conservation garden, beds featuring heritage varieties, a Mediterranean garden and a herb garden. Ponds and greenhouses are also part of the grounds. The Bühler brothers laid out the garden in 1885 on the château grounds. Its themed sections set it apart from the avenues and garden structures in the Château park.
Classified as a “Refuge” by the Ligue de Protection des Oiseaux (LPO), the Jardin Potager has bird nesting boxes, insect hotels and shelters for bats. Binoculars for observing wildlife can be borrowed on site. Individual visitors can enter the garden free of charge during the tourist office’s opening hours. Guided tours are available for groups by appointment, and educational workshops are offered for school classes. Check the tourist office’s opening hours before your visit.
The Tripoulin runs through the Parc public de Bonnétable. Paths, preserved washhouses and opportunities to observe wildlife are characteristic of the park. There is a children’s playground at the entrance, and fishing is permitted in the ponds.
Culture and local history
The Catherine-Paysan Museum features a classroom from an earlier era, the former staff accommodation with a kitchen and bedrooms, and exhibitions about Catherine Paysan’s life and work. The Maison d'école natale de l'écrivain Catherine Paysan is one of only two houses in France that are both a former school and a writer’s house.
The Église Saint-Sulpice also offers historical and artistic points of interest. It was founded by Yves de Bellesme, Lord of Bonnétable. The church houses a wooden organ dating from 1850 and stained-glass windows created by Fialeix.
Walking routes and the Transvap
The historic walking tour of Bonnétable is an easy, two-hour route on foot. It is available on request from the tourist office. A longer option is “Côté chemin, côté jardin”: this 18 km walking route, classed as a Sentier de Promenade et de Randonnée (PR), is rated moderate and is listed as taking three hours. The different durations and difficulty ratings can help you compare the routes. Ask the tourist office about the historic walking tour before planning it.
The Transvap offers a 17 km train ride through the rural countryside and bocage. Its trains run regularly during the summer season and travel as far as Bonnétable. As services are seasonal, check the operating days before your trip.
