If you are planning a stay in Chammes, you can organize your outings around two themes: trails and cultural heritage sites. Route data can help you compare different tours, while the church and chapel offer further specific points of interest to include in your plans. Whether you want to focus on one route or combine trails and culture is up to your interests.

Compare hiking routes and tours

The host municipality of Sainte-Suzanne-et-Chammes has more than 100 kilometres of signposted trails for hiking, horseback riding and mountain biking. The trail network accommodates a range of activities. As its details may be updated, check the information for your chosen route when planning.

Circuit de Chammes No. 30 is classified as both a mountain biking circuit and a Sentier de Promenade et de Randonnée (PR) hiking trail. It is 10.5 kilometres long, with 150 metres of descent, 147 metres of ascent and a stated duration of 2 hours and 45 minutes. This combination of distance and duration gives you a specific point of reference for planning your time.

The Circuit Trail du Côté de Cham runs from Sainte-Suzanne to Chammes. It is rated moderate, is 12.8 kilometres long and has 130 metres of descent and 129 metres of ascent. Some sections of the route follow sunken lanes. Compared with Circuit de Chammes No. 30, this route is longer; it is also the only one of the two rated moderate. The two sets of details therefore allow you to compare distance and classification, although no duration is given for either.

Another option is Boucle Multi-Randonnée No. 02, a circular route through Sainte-Suzanne, Torcé and Chammes. These three named places define the loop’s course. Alongside the two circuits, it offers another route option if you want to take the course into account, rather than just distance or elevation details.

Church and chapel as cultural points of interest

The Église Saint-Pierre de Chammes houses a protected Stations of the Cross consisting of 14 paintings from the mid-20th century. The protection notice is dated 6 August 2020. Inside the church, the paintings are on the north and south walls of the nave and the south wall of the side aisle. Their distribution across several walls is one of the specific features of these Stations of the Cross.

The church’s colouring is also striking: the iron-rich platy sandstone gives it particularly noticeable reddish-brown hues. This brings two distinct aspects together—the protected painted Stations of the Cross inside the church and the visible material that shapes its exterior appearance.

Circuit de Chammes No. 30 passes by the Chapelle de la Raierie. The chapel’s dedication is unknown; it also served as a stop during Rogation processions. According to its historical tradition, it is said to have been founded in the second half of the 19th century in fulfilment of a vow for healing after an injury caused by a horse’s kick. The wording “is said to have been founded” preserves the traditional, rather than definitive, nature of this founding story.

When looking for a hotel in Chammes, you can consider what you want to focus on during your stay: a route with a stated duration, a trail rated moderate, or the cultural themes of the church and chapel. If you would like to combine several of these interests, Circuit No. 30—with its section leading to the Chapelle de la Raierie—offers a specific link between a route and a place of interest.
