Saint-Philbert-Du-Peuple is predominantly rural: wooded areas alternate with agricultural land, and the commune remains heavily forested, especially with pine. Key planning considerations include architectural history, horse-riding activities, painting, and cycling and walking routes. If you are looking for a hotel, first consider which of these interests matter for your stay: would you like to see historical details, plan a horse-riding or art activity, or spend time on a route?

Church, monument and history of milling

The Église has major construction phases dating from the 12th and 16th centuries and has been listed as a historic monument since 26 October 1972. Its stepped gable stands out on the façade; the Romanesque portal has three archivolts. For travellers interested in culture, these offer two points of interest side by side: the building’s development over time and the specific design of the portal.

Château d’Etiau is also partially listed as a historic monument. The protected features include the façades and roofs of the parts of the building dating from the 18th century. Moulin de la Rivière, also known as Moulin d’Étiau, offers a different historical perspective: it is the last surviving remnant of around thirty mills that operated along the Lathan between Longué and Vernantes until the mid-19th century. At the edge of Saint-Philbert-Du-Peuple, in the direction of Longué, there is also a small oratory with features dating back to the 13th century. Thus, the church and château highlight architecture and monument protection, while the mill illustrates the former use of mills along the Lathan.

Horse riding and painting

Écuries du pont de l’étang welcomes children aged four and over, as well as adults, throughout the year. Riding lessons are offered in groups and individually, from beginner to advanced level. There are also trail rides by reservation and pony taster sessions. Check the latest programme and booking details before your trip; trail rides require a reservation.

In the town centre, artist Léonie Sommer opens a studio with a gallery by appointment. She also holds painting workshops and classes in Saint-Philbert-Du-Peuple. If you are planning a studio visit, arrange it in advance. Before travelling, also check for suitable dates for workshops or classes.

Landscape and routes

Circuit Gravel N°16 is a 111 km gravel cycling route starting from Saint-Philbert-Du-Peuple. The Les Pinèdes circular route is 12.8 km long and passes through fields and pine forests in turn. The routes therefore differ considerably in length and type: one is a gravel cycling route, while the other is a circular route through changing landscapes. When choosing, you can start by considering these two criteria, rather than treating the routes as similar options.

Pine forests also shape the rural character of the area, while agricultural land adds another element to the landscape. Visitors focusing on architectural history will find different points of interest from those who mainly want to plan horse riding, painting, or one of the routes. This makes it possible to weigh up different interests for your stay without combining them into a single itinerary.
