Saint-Mathurin-Sur-Loire brings together several themes that may shape your travel plans: the Loire and its habitats, local heritage, art, and recurring events. During your stay, it is worth considering which of these interests you most. Nature activities are tied to specific weekdays and school holidays; art venues and historic architecture offer different points of interest.

Loire Odyssée and understanding the Loire

The Loire Odyssée visitor centre is located on the banks of the Loire. Its exhibition space covers more than 250 m² and is devoted to the Loire, its flora and fauna, and the special relationship between the river and the people who live along its banks. A playful presentation also explains how the Loire works, its biodiversity, and its landscapes. Here, nature, landscape, and human life are presented as interconnected themes. Individual exhibits may change over time.

Local history and Loire routes

The Circuit découverte – Saint-Mathurin-sur-Loire starts and ends at Place Charles Sigogne, opposite Loire Odyssée. It includes seven interpretation panels that present the heritage history of the delegated municipality. Local history is therefore the focus of this walk. La Loire à Vélo also passes through Saint-Mathurin-Sur-Loire; for this route, the stretch through the town is the main point of interest. Check the route and signage before setting out.

Nature outings with a seasonal rhythm

Loire Odyssée regularly offers guided nature outings along the banks of the Loire. On Wednesdays during school holidays, these include family activities about European beaver tracks and aquatic life. You can explore nature in different ways: through the playful interpretation at the visitor centre or on a guided outing along the riverbank. Dates and topics may vary; check which activities are scheduled for your travel dates.

Art and architectural history

The Atelier Guy Montis is a permanent venue for viewing the works of painter Guy Montis and also hosts exhibitions by guest artists. Opening hours and visiting arrangements may change, so check before your visit. Galerie Hors-Champ is in the centre of the delegated municipality of Saint-Mathurin-sur-Loire and offers an annual contemporary art programme that changes with the seasons. You can therefore choose between a permanent connection to Guy Montis and changing contemporary art exhibitions as different reasons to visit.

The Église Saint-Mathurin-sur-Loire also has a place in local history: it was built in two construction campaigns, in 1840 and 1846, under the architect Villers. These two phases place the church’s construction within the history of the town.

Market, Ban’Quai, and a local speciality

The Marché Saint-Mathurin-sur-Loire takes place regularly on Tuesdays from 8 am to 1 pm at Place de l’Église. Check the market date before travelling. Ban’Quai follows a different rhythm: the festival takes place every year on the third weekend of September in Saint-Mathurin-sur-Loire and opens the Loire-Authion cultural season. Exact dates and the programme vary each year. When planning, distinguish the regular market day from the annual cultural event.

Blanc de Sable is one of the specialities of Loire-Authion. In Saint-Mathurin-sur-Loire, it is available at Boulangerie Maison Boisson, 10 place de l’église. As information about points of sale may change, check before your visit.

Getting there and getting around

The Halte ferroviaire de St-Mathurin is located at the Gare SNCF, 49250 Saint-Mathurin. Check current TER services before your trip. A free, easily accessible car park is located at Place du 19 mars 1962, below the Loire Odyssée visitor centre. Parking arrangements may change during construction work or events.
