Mûrs-Erigné offers several ways to explore on foot: two circular trails, a digital discovery route and designated long-distance hiking stages. They differ in length, duration and format. The area also features vineyards, woodland paths, a rocky outcrop overlooking the Loire riverbed and the former Port Sablier sand harbour. When planning, you can decide how much time to allow for a circular walk or a longer stage, and which landscape features interest you.

Circular Trails and Their Durations

The “Mûrs côté Aubance” circular trail is 7.6 km long and takes about 2 hours and 10 minutes. The “Tour d’Érigné” covers 5.1 km and takes about 1 hour and 20 minutes. It is therefore 2.5 km shorter; based on the approximate times, the difference is around 50 minutes. For planning your day, the Tour d’Érigné offers the shorter time commitment, while Mûrs côté Aubance is the longer circular walk. The “Mûrs côté Aubance” trail also passes through vineyards, woodland paths and the countryside near Mûrs-Erigné and its hamlets. If you want a circular walk that specifically takes in vineyards and woodland paths in the same landscape, this is a clear option to consider.

Another option is the digital discovery route “En quête de plantes, vertige de la botanique” (“In Search of Plants, the Thrill of Botany”), which uses the free Baludik app. Its botanical theme offers a different focus from comparing circular trails by length and duration. This means the selection includes not only circular and long-distance trails, but also a digital discovery route focused on plants and botany.

Long-Distance Hiking Stages and Wine Country

For longer hikes, you can compare two long-distance stages. The sixth stage of the GR®3 runs from Mûrs-Erigné to Rochefort-sur-Loire, is 16.8 km long and is designated as a one-day hike. The fifth stage of the GR® de Pays Coteaux du Layon et de la Loire runs from Mûrs-Erigné to Saint-Aubin-de-Luigné; it covers 21.3 km and takes about 5 hours and 20 minutes. The second stage is therefore 4.5 km longer. Their destinations also differ: Rochefort-sur-Loire and Saint-Aubin-de-Luigné mark the end of the respective stages. You can consider distance, duration and destination together when planning.

On the GR® de Pays Coteaux du Layon et de la Loire stage, the route leads from the banks of the Loire into the wine-growing area and appellation zone of the Coteaux du Layon. La Roche de Mûrs combines vineyards with a unique rocky outcrop overlooking the Loire riverbed. The stage thus marks a transition from the banks of the Loire into the wine region, while La Roche de Mûrs is defined by the outcrop above the riverbed.

A Historical Connection to the Loire

Port Sablier was a former sand harbour where the extraction of Loire sand began in the 19th century. For travellers who want to explore the Loire’s past use as well as its landscapes and trails, this offers a specific historical connection.

A circular walk of just over an hour calls for a different time commitment than a long-distance hiking stage lasting several hours. Plan according to how much time you would like to set aside for trails, landscapes and local history, then find a hotel for your stay.
