If you’re looking for a hotel in Chemillé-Melay, you can plan your trip around the outings that interest you: a garden and cooking workshop, historic sites or a walk. The options vary in theme, route length and difficulty. So when planning your day, it’s worth keeping the specific details of each route in mind.

Jardin Camifolia: Gardens and Cooking Workshop

Jardin Camifolia features six themed gardens and an interactive sensory, playful and experimental trail. If you’d also like to discover plants through food, you can plan a cooking workshop using wild plants. The workshop introduces recipes, followed by a tasting of the dishes prepared. Check the workshop’s availability before booking.

The garden is a 500-metre walk from Chemillé railway station. If you’re travelling by train, check connections and the timetable before setting off. This lets you plan the garden visit and your journey separately, without assuming a particular connection.

Hikes of varying distances

The Circuit touristique de Chemillé is an easy circular route of about four kilometres. It starts and ends in Chemillé-en-Anjou, and takes approximately two and a half hours. This makes it a shorter option than the Chantoiseau hike, which starts and ends in Melay and is 11.65 kilometres long. Chantoiseau is rated moderate. The two routes therefore differ in both length and stated difficulty. Signposting and conditions may change; check them before setting off.

Another option is the historic walk through the Notre-Dame and Saint-Léonard neighbourhoods. The circular route is about three kilometres long and has eleven stops. Its stated distance makes it comparable to the four-kilometre Circuit, while its stops give it a distinct focus. You can include it in your plans as a standalone route, without equating it with one of the longer hikes.

The panoramic hike from Melay passes the Jardin du Curé, the ruins of the Collégiale Saint-Martin and the town’s ponds. Chantoiseau also passes the Jardin du Curé and the ruins of the Collégiale Saint-Martin, as well as the Chapelle des Martyrs and the Étang de Coulvée. Access to individual sites along the routes may vary. If particular stops are important to you, check access before your visit.

Heritage in Chemillé

The Chemillé heritage trail passes the old castle fortifications and the ruins of the Collégiale Saint-Léonard. These stops give the walk a historical focus. During work in 2012, extensive layers of Romanesque and Gothic wall paintings were uncovered in the former Notre-Dame church in Chemillé-Melay.

Picnic spots and trails in Melay

The picnic area by the Melay ponds has spacious, shaded green spaces and ponds. It includes children’s play equipment and walking paths around the ponds. The picnic area is accessible to people with reduced mobility. This makes it a place to take a break outdoors while also offering its own trails and leisure activities.

The picnic area at Jardin du Curé is in the centre of Melay, between the town hall and the church. It is a quiet, green space maintained by volunteers. Several hikes can be continued beyond the gate. Both the panoramic hike from Melay and Chantoiseau pass the Jardin du Curé; the site is therefore a recurring landmark in the route descriptions, but not a substitute for their differing lengths and other stops.

By car to the Vendée Wars

Another option for an outing is the 50-kilometre tourist route to the Vendée Wars, which starts in Chemillé. It is designed as a driving route, offering a different focus from the circular walking trails. When planning, you can treat it as a separate outing alongside a garden visit, a heritage walk and hikes.
