La Chevrolière offers travellers several points of interest: Passay's fishing history, the exhibitions and aquarium at the Maison des Pêcheurs, hiking trails and a guided nature visit. If you're looking for a hotel in La Chevrolière, these differences can help with your planning: are you mainly interested in culture, hiking or birdwatching?

Passay: fishing village on Lac de Grand-Lieu

Passay is the only fishing village on Lac de Grand-Lieu. Fishing has taken place there since the Middle Ages. The summer and winter harbours are directly accessible from Place des Pêcheurs. Passay is also a special place to enjoy views of the lake: it offers one of the few freely accessible viewpoints over Lac de Grand-Lieu, in both summer and winter.

Local fishing also includes the offerings of Dominique Guillet, a professional fisherman on Lac de Grand-Lieu in La Chevrolière. He offers live or prepared eels, cooked Louisiana crayfish, pike, zander, carp and bream, as well as fish for pond stocking. You can check availability and sales periods before visiting.

The history and lake at the Maison des Pêcheurs

The Maison des Pêcheurs has three museum exhibition areas. They trace the history and daily life of the “Passis”, the residents of Passay, from 1900 to 1960. Alongside the fishing tradition, the focus is also on the lives of the people connected with the place.

At the aquarium, you can see fish and the aquatic flora of Lac de Grand-Lieu in 15 freshwater tanks. The Maison des Pêcheurs' 12-metre-high panoramic observation tower offers a different view of the lake: from there, you can see Lac de Grand-Lieu and its protected reserve.

The Maison des Pêcheurs offers guided tours year-round. Children's workshops are held on Wednesdays or during school holidays; educational workshops are available for groups. There are also activities linked to temporary exhibitions. Individual activities may change, so it's worth checking the current schedule before making plans.

Hiking trails and guided nature observation

The Circuit Aquaterra is a moderately difficult circular hiking trail that starts and finishes in La Chevrolière. It is 14.5 kilometres long and runs through bocage landscapes and vineyards in the La Chevrolière countryside. The Circuit de Passay has a different landscape focus: the route follows the banks of the Ognon and leads to Passay, a traditional fishing village.

For planning purposes, the trails differ in the features described: the Circuit Aquaterra is specified as a circular route, with its length and difficulty given; for the Circuit de Passay, the route along the Ognon and its destination, Passay, are specified. No walking time is given for either trail.

The ornithological observatory is accessible only as part of a guided visit with a nature reserve guide. A 300-metre path then leads through reed beds and meadows to the observatory. It is equipped with spotting scopes and binoculars and lies between Lac de Grandlieu and a wet meadow that provides favourable conditions for birdlife. Check the requirements for guided access before your trip.

Depending on your interests, you can choose between a hike through the La Chevrolière countryside, the fishing village of Passay and a supervised visit to the observatory. The places and activities offer different experiences; this does not imply a single route connecting them.
