Discover La Chapelle-Glain
Accommodation in La Chapelle-Glain
La Chapelle-Glain can be explored through two interests during a stay: cultural history and time outdoors. Château de la Motte-Glain and the Church of Saint-Pierre-et-Saint-Paul reflect the history of the buildings and the area. La prairie des sources offers a pond area with a picnic spot and play facilities; the Sentier des Ardennes passes through a variety of landscapes. You can therefore decide what to focus on based on whether you would rather explore historic buildings or spend time at a pond area and on a scenic trail.
Pond area and scenic trail
La prairie des sources is a pond area popular with walkers and anglers. The site has a picnic spot and play facilities. This gives the place a specific appeal for visitors who want to combine a break outdoors with a spot by the water. The picnic spot and play facilities are two separate amenities on the same site. If either facility is important for your visit, check its current status beforehand; facilities can change over time.
The Sentier des Ardennes offers a different focus. It passes through agricultural landscapes—from bocage to areas affected by land consolidation and on into the forest. This sequence makes the changing scenery one of the route’s defining features. If you enjoy taking in different types of scenery on an outing, you can think of the trail in those terms: the focus here is a route through agricultural areas and on into the forest. The two options for spending time outdoors are therefore different: at La prairie des sources, the focus is on the pond area and staying on site; on the Sentier des Ardennes, it is on the landscape along a trail.
Château de la Motte-Glain
Château de la Motte-Glain was rebuilt in the 15th century by Pierre de Rohan. This century is therefore a point of reference for the château’s architectural history. Its visitors included Charles VIII, Anne of Brittany, Charles IX and Catherine de’ Medici. These names add four historical figures who visited the château to its architectural history. The château can thus be considered both in terms of its rebuilding and the visits mentioned, without confusing the two aspects.
Guided and self-guided visits for individuals were offered; group visits were available year-round by request. If you are planning a visit, check current dates in advance. Groups should submit a request.
Church and local history
The Church of Saint-Pierre-et-Saint-Paul was built in 1870. A distinctive historical trace concerns its bell tower: a bell was discovered there that Nicolas Garcia had cast in 1688 for the poor hospital in Cartagena, Colombia. The casting date is 182 years earlier than the church’s construction, so the bell and the church building represent different periods. The church also contains a memorial plaque to the Marquis de la Rochequairie. Your visit can therefore offer insight into different aspects of local history: the church’s construction date, the bell’s earlier history and the person commemorated by the plaque.
