Frossay: Wetlands, Trails and Maritime Heritage
Accommodation in Frossay
Frossay brings together wetlands in the Loire estuary, trails for cycling and hiking, and notable heritage sites. Visitors considering the area as a destination can choose between nature watching, activities by the water, and traces of history. When planning, it’s important to consider not only the themes but also specific trail lengths and access conditions.
Wetlands and Birdwatching
The Massereau and Migron reserves stretch across Frossay and Le Pellerin and cover almost 700 hectares of protected wetlands in the Loire estuary. They attract migratory birds; in winter, these include teal as well as greylag and brent geese. The reserves are not open for independent visits. However, the département or its partners regularly organise guided tours.
Cycling and Walking Trails
La Loire à Vélo is a developed, signposted cycling route. The Circuit du Carnet is a 9 km circular walking trail along the Canal maritime de Basse-Loire, with opportunities for fishing and birdwatching. It is marked in yellow and suitable for families.
A shorter route is the 2 km Promenade Patrimoine Le Migron/La Roche. Nine information panels cover the river, maritime, and human history of the two villages. The trails therefore differ in length and theme: the circular route combines exercise with fishing and birdwatching, while the promenade explores history through its panels.
The Circuit de l'Île Adet is accessible only during the dry season. The conditions differ for planning purposes: the reserves require a guided tour appointment, while this route depends on the time of year. Check tour dates and, after wet weather, confirm locally whether the trail is accessible.
Historical Landmarks
The Menhir des Pins is 2.60 metres high and points to Neolithic settlement between around 4000 and 2000 BC. The present-day Église Saint-Pierre-aux-Liens replaces an earlier church built around 1450. Its façade features a statue of Saint Peter in Chains, created by Jean Fréour in 1993. Two forms of heritage sit side by side: the promenade presents village history through panels, while the menhir and church provide tangible historical landmarks.
Quai Vert and Activities by the Water
Quai Vert, in the village of Migron in Frossay, offers visitor programmes exploring the local natural environment and heritage. There are also water-based activities, nature walks, events, and bicycle hire. The Club Nautique du Migron offers recreational, introductory, competitive, and ergometer rowing on the Canal maritime de la Basse-Loire.
You can reach Quai Vert by bus from Nantes on LILA 1 to Place de Gaulle in Frossay, then on LILA 16 to Le Migron. From Saint-Nazaire, take LILA 16 to Le Migron. The walk from each stop takes five minutes. Check the timetable before travelling.
