In Batz-sur-Mer, salt marshes, coastal landscapes and historic buildings shape the experience of a visit. If you’re looking for a hotel in Batz-Sur-Mer, you can plan around the themes that interest you most: heritage, nature or activities on the water.

Salt Marshes, Museums and History

The salt marshes of Batz-sur-Mer cover 459 hectares and are privately owned working and production areas. Do not enter without an invitation. Housed in former salt warehouses, the Musée des Marais Salants offers an introduction to the heritage and salt marsh area of the Guérande Peninsula.

Another historic site is the Musée du Grand Blockhaus: a five-storey Atlantic Wall combat bunker from the Second World War that tells the story of the Saint-Nazaire fortifications. The Moulin de la Falaise also combines historic construction with present-day use. The mill dates from the 16th century and was rebuilt identically at its current location on the dune in 1925. A miller still uses its traditional mechanism to process organic buckwheat grains into organic buckwheat flour.

Churches, Chapels and Paludier Villages

The Chapelle du Mûrier is a Flamboyant Gothic chapel dating from the 15th century and is now a ruin. The Église Saint-Guénolé houses several works by Jean Fréour, including “Notre-Dame du Précieux Sang,” “Christ en croix” and “La Sainte Famille.” The church tower was built in the 17th century. In clear conditions, the 70-metre-high Tour Saint-Guénolé offers views of the ocean and salt marshes. An interior spiral staircase with 184 steps leads to the terrace.

The Paludier villages also differ in their distinctive architectural features. Trégaté sits high on a rock; its features include narrow lanes, stone houses, a bakehouse, a well, a granite calvary and 18th-century dormer windows. In Kermoisan, a fresco on the water tower depicts the work of the paludiers. In Roffiat, there is a wooden cross with thirteen hearts and a statue of Notre-Dame du Bonheur. Kervalet is also one of Batz-sur-Mer’s traditional Paludier villages.

Village Walks and Coastal Paths

The 1.3-kilometre Cœur Historique circular walk goes through the village centre and takes in, among other places, the Église Saint-Guénolé, the Chapelle du Mûrier and the Musée des Marais Salants. The Sentier des Douaniers, by contrast, is a 5.5-kilometre coastal loop. This gives you a choice between a shorter route with stops in the village centre and a longer coastal circuit, without assuming walking times.

The Dune de la Falaise is home to many protected plant and animal species and has an educational trail. For cyclists, the Vélocéan route passes through Batz-sur-Mer and offers views of the region’s nature and heritage. The two routes have different focuses: the Cœur Historique links stops in the village centre, while the Sentier des Douaniers is described as a coastal loop.

Water Activities and Low-Tide Foraging

Surfing, bodyboarding and stand-up paddleboarding are available at Plage de la Govelle; water conditions and activity availability vary by season. The École de Voile Valentin offers windsurfing, introductions to dinghy sailing and catamaran sailing, sea trips and coastal cruises. These activities may also be seasonal.

At low tide, you can look for shellfish and crustaceans on the shore. During spring tides, the tourist office offers introductions to this activity. Be sure to observe the local rules.
