Muchedent offers different ways to shape a stay: hiking in the Varenne Valley and exploring the architectural and artistic history of the Église Saint-Pierre. When looking for a hotel, you can first consider what you want your trip to focus on.

Hiking trails in the Varenne Valley

The Forêt d’Eawy is located in the Varenne Valley near Muchedent and is considered one of the most beautiful beech forests in Europe. There are numerous hiking trails in the valley. One specific option is La Crapaudière, an 8.8-kilometre circular route in Muchedent. The many trails are part of the wider hiking offering; the distance applies to this named route.

The circular route passes through the Forêt domaniale d’Eawy, by remarkable trees and to viewpoints overlooking the Varenne Valley. When choosing a route, distance and course are two different considerations: 8.8 kilometres describes the distance, while the forest, trees and valley views describe the character of the trail. Plan your time according to your own pace and check trail conditions before setting out. The beech forest defines the woodland section, while the viewpoints draw the eye across the Varenne Valley; the landscape offers a variety of impressions.

Église Saint-Pierre: architectural history and interior

The Église Saint-Pierre dates from the 12th century and was altered in the following century. Its origins and alterations therefore mark two successive medieval building phases. The church’s features include a remarkable barrel vault, painted in 1645. Intersecting bands of diamonds form medallions on it. The 13th-century alterations and the later painting belong to different parts of the church’s history: one concerns the structure, the other the decorative interior.

A barrel vault is a longitudinally arched ceiling. The church also houses a 1580 Marian altar depicting the life of Mary on six panels. There are 65 years between the altar and the vault painting.

The different periods are easy to distinguish: the 12th- and 13th-century building phases are followed by the 1580 altar and the 1645 vault painting. The forms also differ: a sequence of images on the altar contrasts with a geometrically structured ceiling. This offers those interested in culture both a chronological and an artistic comparison.
