Vauville appeals to travelers interested in botanical garden history, prehistoric monuments, and nature. Its varied attractions include the Jardin botanique de Vauville, the Allée couverte des Pierres Pouquelées, the Mare de Vauville nature reserve, and walks in the Anse de Vauville. When planning your trip, it helps to distinguish between these highlights: a garden, an archaeological monument, birdwatching, and a challenging hiking stage each offer a different reason to explore the area.

Garden History and Monuments

The development of the Jardin botanique de Vauville began in 1948. Since 1992, the Botanical Gardens have been classified as a French historic monument. The two dates mark different milestones: the beginning of the garden’s development and its later classification. This places the garden in context both through its origins and its monument status.

The Allée couverte dite des Pierres Pouquelées offers a different historical perspective. This megalithic monument was built in the Neolithic period and is a collective burial site. It is located within the commune of Vauville at an altitude of 134 meters. By decree dated January 28, 1907, the covered alley was classified as a historic monument. Its period, function, and protected status clearly distinguish it from the more recent history of the botanical garden.

The Château de Vauville also has its own connection to the landscape: one of its terraces offers views of the sea and the island of Aurigny. If, alongside gardens and monument history, you are interested in the relationship between architecture and views, this is another specific aspect of the area.

Wetlands, Dunes, and Birdwatching

The Mare de Vauville nature reserve includes stabilized dunes, hygrophilous meadows, and temporary ponds, also known as wet hollows. The description thus encompasses different habitats: dunes lie alongside wet meadows and water bodies that exist only temporarily. Visitors interested in observing nature will find a different focus here than at the historic attractions.

There is an ornithological observatory in the Mare de Vauville. A path between willows and blackthorn bushes leads to it. If you are planning a visit, check the local visitor regulations in advance. This helps distinguish observing the nature reserve from the specific access conditions for the observatory.

The Anse de Vauville dune massif, which covers more than 700 hectares, stretches across several communes, including Vauville. This area refers to the massif, not to Vauville alone. In the Anse, you can hike the GR223, go cycling, and watch birds; access to individual activities may depend on local conditions. This allows you to tailor your visit to different interests in nature without conflating these activities or the dune area with the Mare.

Hiking Trails and Getting to the Circular Route

There are two different connections to the GR223 for hiking. The “Entre mare et dunes” circular route begins at the parking lot in the center of Vauville and follows the GR223 along the coast. The “GR®223 – Nez des Voidries – Biville” stage, by contrast, includes a stop in Vauville before continuing above the dunes and the sea. This stage is described as a difficult 15.9-kilometer hike. The information about the circular route and the stage therefore differs: the circular route specifies its starting point in the village center and its coastal section, while the stage also gives its length and difficulty.

At weekends and during school holidays, the start of the “Entre mare et dunes” circular route is accessible via the Cap Cotentin bus network, using the “Vauville – Le Bourg” stop. Check the timetable before setting out. The route and conditions for the GR223 stage may change locally; the difficulty and conditions of a route may also vary. So when planning a hike as part of your trip, take into account the description of the specific route and the stated limitations.
