Saint-Fromond offers historic buildings, waterside attractions and routes for walkers and cyclists. Specific destinations include the Église priorale Saint-Fromond and the Château de la Rivière; the Canal de Vire et Taute adds its own history and information about the marshlands. The following details can help you choose a focus for your stay.

Abbey Church and Architecture

The Église priorale Saint-Fromond and the grounds of its former cemetery were listed as a historic monument by decree on 23 November 2004. The surviving features include one bay with aisles, a transept and a choir ending in a semicircular apse. A bay divides the church interior; aisles run alongside the nave, while the transept extends across it. The choir ends in the semicircular apse.

A small visitor booklet entitled “Il était une fois… L’église Abbatiale” is available on site at the Abbatiale de Saint-Fromond. If you would like to include the booklet in your visit, check its availability in advance.

Château de la Rivière and White Storks

The Château de la Rivière was built around 1090 by Odon de Conteville, the half-brother of William the Conqueror. It served to protect the eastern approaches to the Vire. The château thus adds a different historical perspective to the church architecture: here, the focus is on its defensive role. It is also a nesting site for white storks. The château and surrounding fields are privately owned; please respect the site when observing the storks.

Canal, Walk and Cycle Route

The Canal de Vire et Taute is 11.5 km long and connects the Vire and the Taute. Along the canal, information panels cover its history, the environment, the marshlands and the white storks. You can reach the towpath along the Canal de Vire et Taute from the D974, travelling from Saint-Jean-de-Daye towards Carentan. At the third roundabout, turn left and first follow the signs for “Maison des Ormes”, then for “Port des Planques”. Check the route before setting out, as access information may change with road conditions.

For cyclists, La Vélomaritime / EuroVelo 4 runs from Saint-Lô along the Vire towpath to Saint-Fromond. The Voie verte section towards Saint-Fromond is described as fully secured and very easy; check the route conditions before setting out, as they may change. For a walk, Saint-Fromond offers the 11 km “Entre haut et bas-pays” loop. The route sheet is dated March 2022; check the route conditions before setting out. For the “Entre haut et bas pays – Saint-Fromond” loop, the market square and the abbey car park are suggested starting points. It passes through Saint-Fromond and the surrounding hamlets. This gives you a specifically measured walk and a cycle route with a described course to choose from when planning your day.
