Discover Pirou-Plage: Dunes and Tides
Accommodation in Pirou-Plage
Explore Pirou-Plage through several distinct coastal features: its dune landscape, the ebb and flow of the tides, and the route of the GR®223 long-distance trail. There are also water sports and the annual Foire aux bulots. When planning a stay, it helps to distinguish between them: the water level shapes activities along the shore, the paths offer a separate hiking experience, and the event takes place every year in late April. You can therefore shape your trip around nature, activities by the sea, or the events calendar.
Dunes and plant life
The Dunes de Pirou lie on both sides of Pirou-Plage. They are one of four dune areas within the sensitive natural sites protected by the Department. Endemic plants grow there, including the European orchid Orchis bouffon. The dunes not only shape the landscape, but also add a botanical dimension to your stay. If you would like to explore natural areas and plant life as well as the sea on a coastal trip, this offers a focus of its own.
Tides and activities along the shore
The state of the tide determines which activities are possible along the shore. Depending on the tide, you can swim in Pirou-Plage or fish on foot in the tidal zone. At low tide, you can also bathe in a pool of water. On sandy areas, you can find swimming crabs, mussels, periwinkles and cockles while shellfish gathering and fishing along the coast. If one of these activities is central to your visit to the shore, check the tide times in advance and plan accordingly.
Hiking on the GR®223
The GR®223 reaches Pirou-Plage and then runs along the sea wall. It also passes through dunes before reaching the Havre de Geffosses. The GR®223 stage from Pirou-Pont to Coutainville-Plage is 19 km long. The route along the sea wall and through the dunes describes the landscape, while 19 km is the distance of a specific stage—two different points of reference for planning your hike.
Water sports and season
Pirou Fun Beach offers water sports in Pirou-Plage. The base rents stand-up paddleboards and kayaks. From a chalet on the esplanade of the campsite in Pirou-Plage, the provider offers jet ski trips accompanied by a qualified instructor. These are two different types of activity: stand-up paddling and kayaking involve renting a board or kayak, while jet skiing involves a guided trip. The activities are seasonal and subject to conditions, so check in advance whether your preferred activity is available on your travel dates.
Foire aux bulots in April
A recurring culinary event is the Foire aux bulots: it takes place every year over a weekend in late April in Pirou-Plage and was established in 1996. Professional vendors sell seafood at the event; individual details may vary from one edition to another.
