Les Pieux appeals to travellers who want to include coastal scenery, hikes and water activities in their travel plans. Anse de Sciotot, the trails around La Roche Ă  Coucou and the water sports on offer each provide a different focus. When choosing your destination, you can therefore consider whether you are mainly looking for views, longer hikes, opportunities to observe nature, or activities on and in the water.

Coastal scenery and views

Anse de Sciotot stretches for four kilometres from Cap de Flamanville to Cap du Rozel. It is also a refuge with great biodiversity: numerous seabird species nest there or stop to rest during migration. Their presence and the opportunities to observe them therefore depend in part on the season.

Rising above the cove, La Roche Ă  Coucou is a natural rocky promontory of Armorican sandstone, 135 metres high. From there, panoramic views extend from Cap du Rozel to Cap de Flamanville. Marked trails around La Roche pass through flowering heathland, Norman bocage, steep cliffs and sandy beaches. Cap du Rozel is a separate rocky headland, 130 metres high, overlooking Anse de Sciotot and Surtainville beach.

Hiking between coast and countryside

The GR 223 long-distance trail, also known as the Sentier des douaniers, passes through Anse de Sciotot and offers hikers exceptional views of the English Channel. The 80-kilometre route runs from Plage d’Urville-Nacqueville in the north to the dunes of Surtainville in the south. Until the beginning of the 20th century, the GR 223 was used to monitor the coast in order to prevent or curb smuggling with the Anglo-Norman islands.

The clearly defined circular route “Entre terre et mer – No. 166” is described as 23.6 kilometres long, with a stated duration of five hours and 40 minutes. It is rated very difficult and passes near the ruins of an old chapel. The difficulty rating and time estimate can help with planning; actual trail conditions may vary. Before hiking at La Roche à Coucou, it is also advisable to check local conditions and trail signage.

Culture and traces of the past

At the summit of Cap du Rozel stands the statue Maris Stella, also known as “Vierge des marins.” The work is by Joseph Bataille. Footprints left by Neanderthals are preserved in the ground at the same cape. They are associated with regular human settlement around 80,000 years ago. At this coastal site, a named work of art and a settlement history stretching far into the past come together.

Activities on and in the water

The Centre d’Activités Voile et Vent in Les Pieux offers land sailing, outdoor team games, Longe-côte®, coastal walking in the water and a range of multi-activity options. Hague Sud Plongée runs discovery and introductory dives in the sea and offers Level 1 to 3 training in the pool and in the sea. If one of these activities is a deciding factor for your trip, check its availability and participation requirements in advance.

Swimming and local information

At Plage de Sciotot, the swimming area is supervised in July and August from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Check the hours again before your visit. To get a glimpse of local offerings, the Marché des Pieux takes place every Friday morning, where visitors can meet local producers. Here too, it is a good idea to confirm the date before travelling.
