Le Luot: Church, Wayside Crosses and the Braize
Accommodation in Le Luot
Le Luot offers several clear starting points for planning a trip: sacred architectural history, wayside crosses, historic granite quarrying and the Braize. Its place in the walking trail network of Mont Saint-Michel Normandie is also worth noting.
Église Saint-Pierre and its furnishings
Église Saint-Pierre dates from the 18th century. Its floor plan is cruciform, and it also has a west tower. The west tower stands at the western end of the church building. The cruciform floor plan describes the shape of the church building when viewed from above.
The church preserves a sixteen-sided baptismal font; its dating to the 16th century is indicative, not definitive. A lectern eagle probably dates from the 18th century. The two furnishings thus offer different indications of age, and both datings should be treated with caution. At the same time, they draw attention to different forms of church design: the baptismal font as a liturgical vessel and the eagle as part of a lectern. The dating of the sixteen-sided baptismal font points to the 16th century, an earlier period than the 18th-century church building. In contrast, the attribution of the lectern eagle to the 18th century is probable, but not definitively established.
Wayside crosses and granite history
The wayside crosses also provide clues to their age. La Croix dates from the 16th century, and La Palière from the 17th century. A granite cross was erected in the cemetery in 1668 by Father Basselin. The dates therefore include one attribution to the 16th century, another to the 17th century, and one exact year. The year 1668 pinpoints the date of the cemetery cross.
A later chapter in the town’s history concerns granite quarrying: granite quarries were in operation in Le Luot in the 19th century. This adds a local activity from a later century to the historical perspective offered by landmarks such as the wayside crosses. The crosses and quarrying are separate subjects; together, they provide context for several periods in Le Luot’s history.
The Braize and planning a walk
The Braize rises between Le Luot and Sainte-Pience and is a protected watercourse.
Le Luot is one of the places included in the walking trail network of Mont Saint-Michel Normandie. If you are planning a walk, check current trail conditions before setting out. The town’s inclusion in the walking trail network and the practical planning of a specific walk are two separate steps.
