Le Dézert: Discover Architecture, History and a Walking Trail
Accommodation in Le Dézert
Le Dézert offers several distinct reasons to stay: Romanesque church architecture, sacred art, historic manor houses, a named walking trail and organic dairy products from a farm. Are you particularly interested in architectural history, hoping to plan a walk or keen to discover regional produce? The church, historic estates, trail and farm each have their own appeal.
Church and sacred art
The Église Saint-Martin du Dézert is a Romanesque building with corbels, capitals and sexpartite vaults. Corbels are stone brackets, while capitals form the tops of columns; the sexpartite vault form refers to a division of the church interior. The church also houses the 17th-century statue “Sainte femme couronnée”, which is listed as a protected object. A statue of the Virgin Mary with the infant Jesus from the 18th century is also located there. This makes it possible to distinguish the Romanesque architectural style from the two works of art chronologically.
Chapel and historic estates
The Chapelle Saint-Ortaire in Le Dézert dates from the late 15th century. However, archives and archaeological finds point to earlier origins. A few steps from the chapel is the Fontaine Saint-Ortaire. According to tradition, its water has been credited with healing properties for an unspecified length of time. The chapel is part of the private estate of the Manoir Saint-Ortaire in Le Dézert.
The Manoir Saint-Ortaire, also known as the Manoir de la Mare du Dézert, dates from the first half of the 16th century and is protected as a historic monument. The manor illustrates the layout of a late-medieval and early Renaissance manor house in the Manche department; its floor plan includes a double lower hall and an upper hall. The arrangement of the halls makes the layout part of its architectural classification.
The private Logis de La Perrine dates from 1755/1756. The residence formerly housed a leprosy hospital, the Chapelle Sainte-Catherine and a priory of the Trinitarian order. The dates refer to the residence; the three institutions, by contrast, describe its former uses.
The historical details therefore differ in nature: at the Chapelle Saint-Ortaire, finds point to earlier origins; at the manor, the halls shed light on the layout; and at the residence, the emphasis is on its former uses. These details complement the respective construction dates without making the same kind of statement.
