Discover La Haye-Pesnel: weekly market, nature and cycling routes
Accommodation in La Haye-Pesnel
La Haye-Pesnel offers several distinct starting points for planning your trip: the weekly market, the biodiversity focus of the Refuge Nature de l’Arséantise and three named cycling routes. If you are looking for a hotel, it helps to first narrow down the purpose of your stay. The market takes place on a specific day of the week, visits to the Refuge depend on confirmed opening dates, and you can compare the lengths and individual time estimates of the cycling routes. The route description also includes a historical reference to a bell; however, the bell is no longer there. The following details set out these options to help you plan your trip.
Wednesday morning weekly market
The weekly market takes place every Wednesday morning on the Place de la Mairie. If you would like to plan your stay around this, make sure to include Wednesday morning in your plans and check the current market hours before visiting; they may change.
Biodiversity at the Refuge Nature de l’Arséantise
The Refuge Nature de l’Arséantise is a three-hectare private property in La Haye-Pesnel. Its owners have been managing it to support biodiversity for 15 years. This focus is also reflected in the visitor offer: the Refuge regularly opens its doors and offers free themed events on biodiversity conservation for everyone interested. If nature is a consideration for your trip, this place combines landscaped grounds with related events. The combination of private grounds and regular openings makes biodiversity both a defining feature of the place and a reason to attend events. Please confirm the specific opening dates with the Refuge before your visit.
Compare cycling routes by distance and time
The Circuit de la Lucerne is a 15-kilometre circular cycling route on the edge of the forest of La Lucerne-d’Outremer and through the Thar Valley. A cycling guide from 2010 recommends starting the Circuit de l’Abbaye jaune 23 at La Haye-Pesnel town hall and gives its length as 16 kilometres and its duration as two hours. For the Circuit de la Petite Chapelle, the same guide recommends starting at the town hall and gives a distance of 17 kilometres and a duration of two hours. The two routes in the guide differ in length by one kilometre, with the same stated duration. Distance and stated duration are therefore two separate points of comparison; the extra kilometre alone does not imply a different duration. The two tours in the cycling guide can be compared by distance and their equal stated duration; for the Circuit de la Lucerne, by contrast, the landscape described is the main point of interest. Check route conditions before setting off.
Historical reference at the Church of Sainte-Marie-Madeleine
The Circuit de la Lucerne lists La Haye-Pesnel near the church portal as an intermediate destination and highlights a revolutionary bell cast in 1793. The bell of the Church of Sainte-Marie-Madeleine dates from the Revolutionary period, was cast by Sulpice Jourdan and was protected as a movable cultural object on 30 October 1944. It was stolen on the night of 26–27 March 2023. It is no longer there.
