If you’re looking for a hotel in Joganville, the local highlights can help you plan your trip: the Église Saint-Vigor stands above the bocage and features several historic architectural details. Two hikes differ in their walking times and routes. You can tailor your stay to your interests in architecture, landscapes, or outdoor activity.

Église Saint-Vigor and Historic Details

The Église Saint-Vigor stands on a promontory overlooking the surrounding bocage. Its north façade features striking herringbone masonry, also known as opus spicatum. This construction technique dates the building to the 11th century, or possibly the late 10th century. The building phases are not uniform: part of the nave is thought to date from the 11th century, while the choir is attributed to the 12th century.

The tombs and churchyard are also notable features of the site. Two limestone tombs inside the church have been protected as historic monuments since 1914. Numerous old graves surround the Église, and there is also a notable yew tree. The different parts of the building, the tombs, and the churchyard offer several points of historical interest, without reducing the church’s history to a single period of construction.

The Église Saint-Vigor is located on the Sentier des douaniers and on trails leading toward Mont-Saint-Michel. This network also includes the long-distance GR 223 trail. In addition to religious services, two village associations organize exhibitions and conferences. If you would like to plan your trip around one of these events, check the dates in advance.

Two Hikes with Different Time Estimates

“Porte du marais” is an easy 7.9-kilometer circular route that takes about 2 hours and 35 minutes. “La route des Saints – variante B” is 7.7 kilometers long, also easy and suitable for beginners; the walking time is about 2 hours. The routes are similar in length, but the estimated times range from about two hours to around two and a half hours. The time estimate is therefore a useful point of difference when planning between the two trails.

The “Porte du marais” hike can be started at Joganville town hall and is marked in yellow. The circular route is also open to horse riders. It is not served by the Cap Cotentin bus network, but is accessible by car; there is a parking area near the starting point. Check current traffic information before setting out, as well as trail conditions and markings on site.

“La route des Saints – variante B” starts in Joganville at 6 Rue de la Mairie. It passes through farmland in the Cotentin, where you may see ducks, cows, and donkeys. This gives it a different character from “Porte du marais,” which is described as a circular route: this trail focuses on the agricultural landscape and a hike suitable for beginners.

Private Manor Houses Along the Routes

The Manoir de la Cour de Joganville, a private manor house, is located along the “Porte du marais” route. The Manoir d’Auberville is also private and lies along “La route des Saints – variante B.” Its striking entrance gate features Renaissance-inspired design elements. The location of both manor houses along hiking routes does not guarantee access for visits; do not plan to tour their interiors as part of your hike. The manor houses can be viewed as architectural landmarks along the trails, while the routes themselves remain the hikes described here.
